One of the world’s most famous hotels—the Burj Al Arab in Dubai—has announced a temporary closure lasting one and a half years. Officially, this is due to a large-scale restoration program, but the consequences of military events in the region have also played a role. In particular, infrastructure in Dubai, including the hotel’s facade, was damaged during attacks by Iranian drones. The situation has also affected airport operations and air travel.

What happened to the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai?

One of Dubai’s landmarks—the Burj Al Arab hotel—is officially suspending operations for approximately 18 months. According to the Jumeirah Group, this is due to a large-scale, phased restoration aimed at preserving the building after more than 25 years of operation.

At the same time, the reasons for the closure are not limited to scheduled maintenance. The situation was also influenced by the escalating security situation in the region. In particular, the hotel’s facade was damaged during attacks by Iranian drones in Dubai—the incident occurred on the very first day of hostilities.

According to the UAE Ministry of Defense, air defense systems intercepted over 130 missiles and nearly 200 drones in a single day. Some of the debris fell within the city, causing a fire at the facility.

Drone Attacks and Disruptions at Dubai Airport

The escalation of the situation in the region affected not only the hotel infrastructure but also transportation links. During the incidents involving Iranian drones, operations at Dubai International Airport were temporarily disrupted.

In particular, after a drone struck a fuel tank, the airport was forced to suspend some operations. This led to flight delays and cancellations, as well as route changes for certain airlines.

One of Emirates’ aircraft, which was flying from India to Dubai, was forced to return to its point of departure due to the closure of airspace.
