An advance on Kyiv? Belarus is building roads toward Ukraine and fortifying its positions. Zelenskyy issued a stern warning
Intelligence reports unusual activity: roads are being built toward the border in Belarus, and artillery positions are being set up. Zelenskyy sternly warned Minsk against participating in the war. Find out exactly what the president said and what steps Ukraine is prepared to take in response
Following a briefing by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that intelligence reports indicate preparations are underway along the Belarusian-Ukrainian border, and that an unambiguous warning will be sent to Lukashenko.
Will there be a new offensive on Kyiv from Belarus?
Talk of a possible renewed invasion from the north periodically surfaces in the media, and now there are new grounds for this. According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian military continues to successfully repel Russian assaults on the main fronts, holding its positions. In April, the rate of destruction of the occupying forces remains consistently high, and Russia’s attempts to seize the initiative on the front lines are failing.
However, it is precisely these failures and the colossal shortage of personnel that are forcing the Russian command to seek new ways to create tension. The occupying forces are currently attempting to regroup their forces. Against this backdrop, the increased activity of the armed forces on the territory of the Republic of Belarus appears not as independent exercises, but as an attempt, coordinated with Moscow, to divert the reserves of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and compensate for the lack of Russian resources on other sections of the front.

Why is Belarus building roads and artillery positions near the border with Ukraine?
Ukrainian intelligence data points to very specific engineering and military activities in the Belarusian border region. This is not merely about the movement of equipment, but about major infrastructure development: the construction of roads leading directly to the border with Ukraine, as well as the active establishment of artillery positions.
Such infrastructure preparations traditionally precede either large-scale provocations or attempts to create a real threat of invasion. In Kyiv, these actions are viewed unequivocally: the Russian Federation is making yet another attempt to fully drag Belarus into its war of aggression. By creating a bridgehead in southern Belarus, Moscow is counting on, at a minimum, psychological pressure on the Ukrainian capital, and at most, the use of Belarusian territory for new strikes.
A stern warning to the Belarusian leadership
President Zelenskyy announced that he has already issued a direct order through the relevant diplomatic and special channels to convey a categorical warning to the de facto leadership of Belarus.
The essence of the message boils down to the absolute readiness of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend their land and independence against any encroachments from the north. In his statement, Zelenskyy also drew a fairly clear geopolitical parallel, emphasizing that the nature and consequences of recent events in Venezuela (the operation to capture dictator Maduro) should serve as a sobering factor for Minsk and deter it from making fatal mistakes.
Safety of Foreigners in Ukraine
Against the backdrop of tense news from border regions and regular threats from the aggressor, personal safety remains the top priority. Despite the war, thousands of foreigners—tourists, diplomats, journalists, volunteers, and representatives of international organizations—continue to arrive in Ukraine. Standard medical insurance is critically insufficient under these conditions.
For those planning a trip, the Visit Ukraine portal offers specialized medical insurance covering military risks. This policy is designed specifically for foreigners staying in Ukraine and guarantees financial protection in the event of unforeseen situations.
A reminder! On April 2, 2022, the course of the war changed irrevocably. The liberation of the Kyiv region in the spring of 2022 marked Russia’s first resounding defeat and proved that Ukraine is capable not only of withstanding the blow but also of thwarting the Kremlin’s plans. Find out how events unfolded during those days and why this victory was pivotal.
