Lufthansa is canceling 20,000 flights due to the fuel crisis: how this will affect passengers
The fuel crisis is dealing an unprecedented blow to European air travel. Germany’s Lufthansa is drastically cutting its schedule, canceling 20,000 flights due to a record surge in jet fuel prices. This will lead to higher airfares. Find out which routes will be hit hardest and what passengers should do
German aviation giant Deutsche Lufthansa has decided to make unprecedented cuts to its flight schedule. Company executives announced the cancellation of tens of thousands of flights in an effort to cope with rising operating costs. This news has caused concern among travelers worldwide and raised questions about the future of European air travel amid ongoing instability. The Financial Times reports on this.
Why is Lufthansa canceling flights en masse?
The main reason for such a massive reduction in the schedule was a sharp spike in jet fuel prices. Against the backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions and the conflict in the Middle East, the cost of jet fuel has more than doubled. These costs proved critical for the airline, forcing management to take drastic measures to optimize the budget. Canceling 20,000 flights between May and October will allow Lufthansa to save approximately 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel and reduce the financial burden on the company.
Which flights will Lufthansa cancel by October?
The cuts will primarily affect short-haul flights within Europe. The airline plans to discontinue the least profitable routes operated from its main hub airports—Frankfurt and Munich. The brunt of the cuts will fall on the regional subsidiary Lufthansa CityLine: the carrier is immediately taking 27 older Canadair CRJ aircraft out of service, as they are known for high fuel consumption and expensive maintenance. It is worth noting that despite the alarming figure of 20,000 canceled flights, across the Lufthansa Group’s global network this will result in a reduction in total passenger capacity of just one percent.

Aviation Fuel Shortage in Europe
The move by the German airline reflects a deeper problem looming over the entire region. The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently warned that due to disruptions in oil supplies, current jet fuel reserves in Europe may last only a month and a half. EU ministers are now urgently discussing crisis measures. Options being considered include importing alternative fuels from the U.S. and temporarily suspending strict rules on airport slot usage so that airlines are not fined for forced flight cancellations.
How will flight cancellations affect passengers and ticket prices?
Given the current situation, travelers should prepare for possible changes to their summer plans and subsequent increases in ticket prices.
Since airlines worldwide are forced to offset increased kerosene costs, flight prices will inevitably rise. Additionally, aviation industry representatives are currently actively lobbying for changes to European legislation.
They are asking for the fuel shortage to be recognized as an extraordinary circumstance—this would allow companies to refund passengers only the ticket price for a canceled flight, without paying additional monetary compensation. Passengers are advised to regularly check the status of their bookings and monitor schedule updates.
If your trip involves multiple modes of transport—such as a train, bus, and plane—it’s best to organize your entire itinerary and tickets in one place ahead of time. In particular, this is convenient to do through Visit Ukraine, where a ticket booking system for all modes of transport is available.
Reminder! The global oil market is setting new terms, and Ukrainian gas stations are finally adjusting their prices. Gasoline and diesel prices are falling in line with European prices, despite currency exchange rate pressures. Check out the current prices at your favorite gas stations.
