Ukraine is gradually integrating into major European tourist routes – and these are no longer just loud statements, but concrete projects with the potential to change the approach to travel within the country. One of these is joining the legendary pilgrimage route Camino de Santiago, which is visited by hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world every year.

Ukraine on the map of the major European route

The Lviv Regional State Administration announced on its Facebook page that the Lviv region has officially joined the Way of St. James network – this became possible after signing a memorandum during the international tourism forum in Vinnytsia. The new Ukrainian direction will develop within the framework of the Camino Ruteno initiative.

This is not about symbolic participation, but about creating a full-fledged route that will run through the territory of three regions: Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil.

Thus, Ukraine becomes part of a large European network of hiking routes leading to the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela - the final point of the classic Camino.

Not just a pilgrimage: how is the meaning of the Camino changing?

The modern Camino de Santiago has long gone beyond the boundaries of a purely religious route. For many, it is a way to rethink life, psychological recovery, an opportunity to “reboot” and get to know culture and people in depth.

This is the approach that is planned to be integrated into the Ukrainian part of the route. In particular, in the Lviv region, the Camino will become part of the “Travel Therapy” initiative - a project aimed at supporting military personnel and their families.

Tourism as a tool for recovery

The idea of combining tourism and psychological rehabilitation seems particularly relevant for Ukraine. The experience of other countries shows that long walking routes have a positive effect on a person’s mental state: they reduce stress levels, help restore internal balance, and promote socialization.

The Ukrainian version of the Camino can become not only a tourist product, but also an important social tool.

New opportunities for regions

The launch of the Camino Ruteno opens up prospects for the development of local communities. It is not only about tourists, but also about the economy:

- Development of small businesses (estate estates, cafes, guides);

- Creation of new jobs;

- Popularization of local culture and traditions.

In Europe, the Camino has long been an example of how one route can revitalize entire regions – and Ukraine has every chance of repeating this success.

How to prepare for such a route?

If the idea of walking part of the Camino has interested you, you should consider a few basic things:

- Comfortable trekking shoes are the key to a comfortable journey;

- Distance planning (20–30 km per day for beginners);

- Minimalist backpack;

- Basic physical training.

And most importantly, readiness for an inner journey, which often turns out to be more important than the route itself.
