Airfare Prices Are Set to Rise: How Are Airlines Responding to Rising Fuel Costs?
Airfare prices in Europe are rising due to higher fuel costs and changes in the transportation market. Find out how this will affect travel in 2026 and what passengers can expect
Amid rising jet fuel costs, Europe’s largest airlines are beginning to adjust their ticket prices. British Airways’ parent company has announced fare adjustments to offset costs, reports The Independent.
What is happening with ticket prices?
According to representatives of the International Airlines Group (IAG), which includes British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Iberia, there are currently no disruptions in fuel supply. At the same time, its price has risen significantly.
This is precisely what has become the key factor in the revision of airfare prices. Airlines are forced to adapt to the new conditions to avoid losses.
However, despite the general trend toward higher prices, not all companies are adopting the same strategy. For example, Jet2 announced that it would not introduce additional fuel surcharges. Moreover, the company even removed the relevant clause from its terms and conditions.
CEO Steve Hippe emphasized that customers should be able to book their vacations without the risk of unexpected surcharges. According to him, a fixed price is a fundamental principle of the company.
Brittany Ferries CEO Christophe Mathieu explained that his company purchased fuel in advance, so it is not facing uncertainty. This approach is called hedging—it is a way to lock in a price in advance and avoid market fluctuations. At the same time, he acknowledged that this also carries a risk: if prices fall, the company still pays the previously set rate.
Experts are drawing particular attention to another issue—possible flight cancellations. According to Mathieu, some carriers may cancel flights if they become economically unviable.
Despite the situation, experts emphasize: there is no reason to completely give up on travel. This is especially true for destinations in Europe, particularly France and Spain, which remain accessible and popular. At the same time, the number of summer bookings is already lower than last year—many travelers are planning their trips more cautiously due to the unstable situation.
