One of the most picturesque natural seasons in Ukraine is beginning right now—daffodils are starting to bloom in the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve in Zakarpattia. As the UNIAN news agency recently reported, citing the reserve’s official Facebook page, active budding and the appearance of the first flowers are already being observed in the valley, and the peak of the season is expected as early as this coming weekend. This brief period attracts thousands of tourists from all over Ukraine and abroad every year.

When exactly to plan a visit to the Valley of Daffodils, what makes this place unique on a European scale, what other natural sites are part of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, and how to organize a trip to Transcarpathia during the blooming season—we’ll cover all this in the article below.

When is the peak of daffodil blooming expected in Transcarpathia in 2026?

According to the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, the start of blooming has already been recorded in the valley. The first flowers have appeared within the protected zone, and active budding is underway alongside them. According to forecasts by reserve specialists, large-scale blooming will begin as early as this coming weekend—that is when the valley takes on its characteristic appearance of a solid white carpet, which is precisely why travelers come here.

The reserve administration urges all potential visitors to follow daily updates on the institution’s official pages. Staff regularly report on the progress of the blooming, track changes in the dynamics, and help tourists choose the best time for their trip. The blooming season is short—about two to three weeks—so planning your visit based on the latest information from the reserve is key to not missing the peak of this natural spectacle.

What makes the Valley of Daffodils unique, and why is it worth visiting?

The Valley of Daffodils is a natural phenomenon of European scale, with no analogues on the continent. The narrow-leaved daffodil grows here—a species that, in its natural habitat, is found primarily in high-altitude regions. The Transcarpathian valley remains the only place in Europe where this plant species has spread specifically in the lowlands, rather than in the mountains. It is this botanical feature that makes the valley a rare natural site protected at the national level.

Every year during the blooming season, thousands of tourists visit the valley. A white carpet of flowers spreads across a vast area, creating a unique visual spectacle that cannot be seen anywhere else in Ukraine. Reserve staff emphasize the importance of following the rules of conduct on the territory—visitors may only walk on designated trails to avoid damaging the delicate flowers and to preserve the ecosystem for future seasons.

Carpathian Biosphere Reserve: Size, Territory, and Major Natural Sites

The Carpathian Biosphere Reserve is one of Ukraine’s largest nature conservation areas, with a total area of 66,417.4 hectares. The reserve encompasses territories in four districts of Zakarpattia Oblast: Rakhiv, Tyachiv, Khust, and Berehove. The reserve comprises eight geographically isolated massifs: Svidovets, Chornohora, Kuzia-Tribushan, Marmaros, Uholsk-Shyrokoluzhansk, and the Valley of Daffodils, as well as two botanical reserves of national importance—“Chorna Hora” and “Yuliivska Hora.”

The reserve showcases the full range of landscape and biological diversity of the Ukrainian Carpathians—from foothills to subalpine and alpine meadows, at elevations ranging from 180 to 2,061 meters above sea level. Among the most famous sites located within its boundaries are Ukraine’s highest peak, Mount Hoverla (2,061 m), the legendary Blyznytsia, high-mountain lakes, the geographical Center of Europe, world-renowned primeval beech forests, and the largest karst cave in the Ukrainian Carpathians—Druzhba. The entire territory is divided into four functional zones: a protected zone, a buffer zone, a zone of anthropogenic landscapes, and a zone with a regulated protected regime, which allows for the effective combination of nature conservation with scientific research and tourism activities.

How to plan a trip to the Valley of Daffodils and other locations in Transcarpathia?

A trip to the Valley of Narcissi requires careful planning due to the short blooming season. The best option is to choose dates within two to three weeks of the start of mass blooming, book accommodation in Khust or nearby towns in advance, and plan your route to include other natural attractions in the region. Transcarpathia offers plenty of opportunities for active recreation in the spring: in addition to the Valley of Daffodils, it’s worth visiting the primeval beech forests, the Geographical Center of Europe, the high-mountain lakes, or heading into the mountains to the foothills of Hoverla.
