Ukraine is home to dozens of medieval castles, fortresses, and palaces that preserve centuries of history and boast impressive architecture. From the imposing bastions of Lviv to the mysterious ruins of Transcarpathia, each fortress tells its own story of knights, princes, battles, and love. Today, these landmarks have become popular tourist destinations, and specially designed itineraries allow you to see the most interesting sights in just one or two trips.
Which castle itineraries are worth choosing and what exactly awaits travelers—we’ll tell you more in this article.
Castles of the Golden Horseshoe of Lviv Region: Olesko, Pidhirtsi, and Zolochiv
One of Ukraine’s most famous castle routes runs through Lviv Region and connects three iconic fortresses located along the so-called Golden Horseshoe. The tour “The Golden Horseshoe of Lviv Region — Castles of Lviv Region” starts in Lviv and allows you to visit three remarkable architectural landmarks in a single day: Olesko, Pidhirtsi, and Zolochiv Castles. The route begins at Olesko Castle—a 14th–18th-century museum-reserve that is a must-see for anyone interested in Ukrainian history. The castle impresses with its exhibition of ancient art, and its walls bear witness to the times of ancient princely families.

The next stop is Pidhirtsi Castle, recognized as one of Europe’s finest examples of a Renaissance palace combined with bastion fortifications. Pidhirtsi Park, modeled after the finest Italian parks, deserves special attention. In fact, it is the only park of its kind in Ukraine, and it still retains its original layout and atmosphere. The one-day trip concludes at Zolochiv Castle—one of the most remarkable monuments of defensive architecture in the Galician region. Today, it houses a museum-reserve, which is a branch of the Lviv Art Gallery, so visitors can see not only medieval architecture but also art collections.
The Tunnel of Love and the Castles of Volhynia: from Ostroh to the Tarakaniv Fort
Volhynia attracts travelers with its combination of romantic locations and imposing defensive structures. The two-day tour “Tunnel of Love + Castles of Volhynia” covers several notable sites: the Ostroh State Historical and Cultural Reserve, the famous Tunnel of Love in Klevan, Dubno Castle, and Tarakaniv Fort.
The route begins in Kyiv and leads to ancient Ostroh—a city where landmarks associated with the Ostroh Academy and the princely dynasty have been preserved.

Next, travelers arrive in Klevan, where the railroad tracks form a natural green tunnel known as the Tunnel of Love. After that, the route leads to Dubno—a city with an imposing castle that served as the region’s key fortress for centuries. The program concludes with a visit to the Tarakaniv Fort—a massive 19th-century military structure that today resembles atmospheric ruins and attracts history buffs and those seeking unique photo locations. The entire route is designed for two days, allowing you to take your time and explore each landmark in detail.

Kremenets Castle, Vyshnevetsky Palace, and Zbarazh Fortress: Castles of the Ternopil Region
The Ternopil region is home to some of the most interesting castle complexes in western Ukraine. The “Castles of Ternopil” tour begins in Kremenets, where the remains of the legendary Kremenets Castle—the former stronghold of Great Volhynia—are located atop Mount Bona. The climb up the mountain is rewarded with panoramic views of the city and the Kremenets Tovtry, and the fortress itself is shrouded in ancient legends about its defenders and mystical patrons.

The next stop on the route is the Vyshnevetsky Palace—the palace and park complex of the Vyshnevetsky family, often referred to as the Volyn Versailles. The palace was built in the French Renaissance style and is the only one of its kind in Ukraine. Taras Shevchenko once worked here, and Honoré de Balzac left enthusiastic reviews of this residence. Zbarazh Castle, which is also part of the itinerary, combines the features of a palace and a fortress. Behind its thick walls lies a rich collection of medieval artifacts, and the halls are constantly being restored and expanded. The day concludes with an evening stroll through Ternopil—a city with cozy pedestrian streets, green parks, and ancient churches.
Ancient Halych: Princely Palaces, Cathedrals, and an Open-Air Castle
Halych is one of Ukraine’s oldest cities and the former capital of the Halych-Volhynian Principality. The one-day tour “Ancient Halych” offers a guided tour of the reserve, which features landmarks from the princely era.
The itinerary includes the Assumption Cathedral, the princely palaces, and the princely spring, as well as the Church of St. Panteleimon, a unique example of 12th-century Old Russian architecture.
Starostyn Castle

Starostyn Castle, situated on a hill overlooking the city, deserves special attention. The route concludes at the Open-Air Museum of Architecture, which features examples of traditional construction from various eras. This trip is ideal for those who wish to immerse themselves in the earliest period of Ukrainian statehood and see the places where the history of the Galician Principality unfolded.
Castles of Transcarpathia: From Palank to the Schönborn Hunting Castle
Transcarpathia stands out among other regions for its unique concentration of castles and palaces linked to the history of Transylvania and the Kingdom of Hungary. The one-day tour “Tour of Transcarpathian Castles + Mukachevo” begins with a visit to Serednyansky Castle—the eastern outpost of the Knights Templar. It is one of the region’s most mysterious fortresses, and the very fact of its connection to the Templars makes a visit here special.

The route then leads to Mukachevo, where travelers explore the historic city center with its medieval churches and town hall, and then ascend to Palanok Castle—a 9th–18th-century fortress considered one of the seven architectural wonders of Ukraine. After Mukachevo, the tour continues with a visit to the 15th-century St. Miklos Castle in the village of Chynadiyevo, known as the “Castle of Love.” The day concludes with a visit to the hunting castle of the Counts of Schönborn—a 19th-century neo-Romantic structure surrounded by an ancient arboretum featuring a fountain of youth, a lake, and enclosures with wild animals.
The Forgotten Castles of Transcarpathia: Khust Fortress, Vynogradiv, and the Royal Nyálab
The Transcarpathian region is home to the buildings and ruins of 12 medieval castles, built between the 10th and 16th centuries. The “Forgotten Castles of Transcarpathia” tour introduces travelers to the region’s lesser-known but exceptionally atmospheric fortresses. The route begins at Khust Castle—the ruins of a former impregnable fortress atop Zamkova Mountain, which took over a century to build to guard the salt route from Solotvyno.

The next stop is the Kankiv Castle in Vynogradiv, a medieval landmark that the Franciscans once converted into a monastery. The castle’s ruins continue to attract tourists and filmmakers today with their photogenic charm. The journey concludes at the Royal Castle of Nyálab in the village of Korolevo, the first written records of which date back to 1262. According to legend, it was here that Hungarian King Stephen V hunted in the local forests and ordered the construction of a hunting lodge, which later became the foundation for a mighty fortress. These little-known locations allow you to discover a different side of Transcarpathia—free of crowds, but with an authentic medieval atmosphere.
