“Lake of Youth” in Bukovel Receives Blue Flag Certification: The World's First Mountain Lake to Earn International Quality Certification
“Lake of Youth” at the Bukovel resort has become the first mountain lake in the world to receive the prestigious international Blue Flag award. Find out what this award means and why it is important for tourists and Ukrainian tourism in general
“Lake of Youth,” located within the Bukovel mountain resort in the Carpathians, has received the international Blue Flag award. This was announced by resort shareholder Zakhar Palytsia.
This is not just an award for a single site—it is an achievement that puts Ukraine on the international tourism map. “Lake of Youth” has become the first mountain lake in the world to receive this quality certification, and it is also the largest artificial body of water in Ukraine.
What is Blue Flag?
Blue Flag is one of the most prestigious international environmental certifications for beaches, water bodies, and marinas. It is issued by the Foundation for Environmental Education and confirms that the water body meets strict requirements regarding water quality, safety, environmental management, and educational standards.
It is difficult even for seaside beaches to obtain it—and for a mountain lake, especially an artificial one, this is an unquestionable record.
“The Blue Flag is not just an international award, but confirmation that Ukrainian tourist destinations can meet the highest global standards,” commented Zakhar Palytsia.

Why is this particularly important for “Bukovel”?
“Lake of Youth” is one of the resort’s main summer attractions. Tens of thousands of guests vacation here every year, so the issues of water quality and safety are critically important.
“We are consistently shaping a new culture of recreation in the Carpathians and proving that a Ukrainian resort can serve as a model for all of Europe,” noted Palytsia.
According to him, receiving the Blue Flag is the result of systematic work on infrastructure quality, safety, and environmental responsibility—not a one-off event ahead of the tourist season.
