Today, Ukraine is attracting the attention of travelers from around the world who want to see a country that is thriving and rebuilding despite a full-scale war. Every year, thousands of foreign visitors choose to travel through Ukrainian cities to understand the context of current events, support the local economy, and interact with people who have witnessed historic changes. Specialized tours offer the opportunity to explore cultural heritage, see the aftermath of the fighting, and participate in volunteer initiatives in affected regions.

We’ll discuss which itineraries are available for foreign and Ukrainian travelers and what they include later in this article.

Traveling Through Ukraine from West to East: 5- and 7-Day Itineraries

For those who want to explore several regions at once, comprehensive multi-day itineraries have been developed. The “Custom Tour: Across All of Ukraine” is a seven-day tour that begins with arrival at Kraków Airport, from where travelers are transferred to Lviv. The first two days are devoted to exploring Lviv—a city tour, walks through historic streets, and time for independent exploration. The itinerary then continues to Kyiv, where participants will visit de-occupied towns in the Kyiv region accompanied by an experienced guide. After the capital, the journey continues by overnight train to Mykolaiv—a city in the south that has suffered significant destruction. There, travelers will enjoy a city tour, a trip to the region’s devastated villages, and a visit to a humanitarian aid center. The tour concludes with a return to Lviv and a transfer to Kraków.

A more compact option is the “Ukraine—From West to East” tour, which lasts five days. The itinerary also begins in Kraków and leads through Lviv to Kyiv, where participants will see the de-occupied territories of the Kyiv region and take the “Unconquered Kyiv” tour. The journey then continues by train to Kharkiv—a city under constant shelling but one that continues to function and rebuild. A three-hour sightseeing tour of Kharkiv offers a glimpse of the scale of the destruction and, at the same time, the daily lives of its residents. The itinerary concludes with a return train ride via Lviv to Kraków. Both tours include comfortable hotel accommodations with breakfast and guided support throughout the entire trip.

De-occupied Cities in the Kyiv and Chernihiv Regions: Tours of Combat Zones

Some itineraries focus on visiting specific towns and villages that survived the occupation. The “Guided Tour of De-occupied Cities” is a one-day trip from Kyiv, during which a guide will lead travelers through key sites of the events of February–March 2022. The route begins in the village of Romanivka, through which the so-called “road of life” to Irpin, Bucha, and Gostomel ran. Here, the legendary crossing over the Irpin River beneath the blown-up bridge remains—the route used to evacuate civilians and supply resources to the defense forces.

Next, participants will see the Hero City of Irpin, including the graveyard of destroyed military equipment on Universytetska Street; they will drive through Bucha along Yablunska Street—the site of footage that shook the entire world— and visit the Church of St. Andrew the First-Called Apostle, on whose grounds a mass grave was established for civilians who were shot. The route also includes Gostomel, where the legendary “Mriya” aircraft was based, and a return trip through the destroyed residential neighborhoods of Irpin.

The “Guided Tour of Chernihiv” is also a one-day tour and begins early in the morning with a departure from Kyiv. The first stop is the village of Yagidne, known for the tragic events of the occupation. Next, travelers cross the bridge over the Desna River and set off on the “Ancient Chernihiv” walking tour—a stroll through the Val Fortress Park and the Boldy Mountains, featuring ancient burial mounds and panoramic views of the city. After learning about Chernihiv’s centuries-old history, participants will see the modern-day consequences of the invasion: the destroyed “Epicenter” shopping center, the damaged stadium, the “Ukraine” hotel, residential neighborhoods, and the Chernihiv Automobile Plant. The tour concludes with lunch at a restaurant near the destroyed theater and a walking tour of the old city center.

Another option for a trip to the south of the country is the “Donation Tour to the Hero City of Mykolaiv”. This two-day tour combines sightseeing with volunteer work. On the first day, participants will take a guided sightseeing tour of Mykolaiv and complete a crash course in first aid. The second day is entirely dedicated to the humanitarian mission: at the volunteer warehouse, participants will receive instructions, load a vehicle with humanitarian aid, and deliver it to distribution points—medical facilities, children’s centers, animal shelters, or directly to those in need. Upon completion of the mission, volunteers will receive a thank-you note from the foundation and commemorative souvenirs. A portion of the proceeds from the tour goes toward funding humanitarian projects in the affected regions of southern Ukraine.
