5.7 Million Ukrainians Abroad: What We Know
According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 5.7 million Ukrainian citizens have been forced to flee abroad as a result of the armed aggression against the country. Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets cited these statistics, timing the publication to coincide with World Refugee Day, observed on June 20.
According to Lubinets, forced displacement has become a reality for millions of Ukrainians, which is why this date holds special significance for Ukraine.

World Refugee Day and Ukraine
Every year on June 20, the global community observes World Refugee Day. In 2026, this date remains particularly relevant for Ukraine given the scale of forced migration. Among the key points highlighted by the Ombudsman:
- more than 5.7 million Ukrainians are abroad due to the war;
- the data is based on official UNHCR statistics;
- Lubinec thanked the countries and communities that have taken in Ukrainian refugees and provided them with safety and dignified conditions;
- the Ombudsman expressed his conviction that Ukrainians will return home.
Dmytro Lubinets emphasized his gratitude to every country, community, and individual who provided support to Ukrainians during this most difficult period. The Ombudsman also stressed his confidence that Ukrainians will certainly return and participate in the country’s reconstruction.
