Ukraine is home to dozens of waterfalls and caves that impress with their scale and diversity. The Carpathian waterfalls, the underground labyrinths of Podillia, and the mountain lakes of Zakarpattia—all of these are accessible to travelers year-round. Carpathian Waterfalls: One-Day Itineraries and Hiking Trips

Carpathian waterfalls are among the most popular natural destinations for travel in Ukraine. Most of them are located in picturesque mountain gorges, accessible via easy trails that require no special training.

As part of the “Guk Waterfall, Polonyna Zalim, and Narinetsky Waterfall” tour, participants will see Zhenetsky Guk—a waterfall at an altitude of 900 m above sea level, where water cascades freely from a height of 15 meters. The route then follows a marked eco-trail through Polonyna Zalim to the Narinetsky Waterfall, which is about 9 meters high. Along the way, you’ll also find a high swing with a panoramic view, the 300-year-old “Valakh” spruce standing 38 meters tall, and a suspension bridge. The route is rated as easy and is suitable for family trips.

Another one-day option is the “Bukhtivets Waterfalls” tour. Participants will see the 8-meter-high Bukhtivets Waterfall and the 10-meter-high Krapelkovyi Waterfall, as well as visit Europe’s only mud volcano, the ruins of Pniv Castle, and the Museum of the Oil Industry of Galicia. The tour combines natural and historical sites into a single itinerary.

The “Kolomyia & Sheshory Waterfalls” tour is designed for those who want to combine nature with a cultural program. In addition to the waterfalls, participants will visit the capital of Pokuttia—Kolomyia—where they will see the Town Hall and the Church of the Annunciation (1587), as well as the Pysanka Museum with a collection of over 10,000 exhibits and St. Nicholas’ Estate. The program also includes a pastry tasting at a local confectionery.

For lovers of active recreation, the “Hike to the Voevodin Waterfall” is a great option. The route runs along a mountain river, with a total distance of about 8 km. The Voevodin Waterfall is located in a remote part of Transcarpathia, where there are practically no crowds of tourists.

Along the way, you can see mini-hydroelectric power stations on the mountain river, and with a bit of luck—roe deer and red deer. The hike starts in Uzhhorod and is designed to last one day.

Caves of Podillia: Underground Labyrinths and Crystals

Western Ukraine is known for its unique caves, some of which are among the largest gypsum caves in the world. Visit Ukraine offers several tours that allow you to see these underground systems from the inside.

The “Optimistic Cave” tour starts in Lutsk and is a one-day trip. Participants travel to the village of Korolivka, receive equipment, and take a four-hour tour of the cave’s “Central” section. The length of the labyrinths in this section exceeds 60 km, and the system itself is spread across three levels. In the first part of the route, guests will visit an underground museum featuring a collection of crystals, helictites, stalactites, and Trypillian pottery shards. The second part requires more stamina—here, you’ll have to traverse long galleries and labyrinthine passages to see the Yuri Averbakh Hall with traces of a former underground lake. After the cave, the group visits Chortkiv and the Pan Czartkowski restaurant-museum, which serves authentic Galician cuisine.

The “One-Day Tour: Crystal Caves & Dzhuryn Waterfall” combines underground passages, a waterfall, and castle architecture. Participants will see the ruins of Chervonohorod Castle with its centuries-old history, the 16-meter-high Dzhuryn Waterfall—the highest in Podillia—as well as the Crystal Cave in the village of Kryvche. This cave is considered the most famous in Western Ukraine: it features two kilometers of walkways for easy exploration.

The most extensive underground route is the tour “4 Caves of Podillia: Mlynky, Optimistic, Atlantis, and Crystal”. This is a two-day trip from Lviv or Ternopil, during which participants descend into four different caves and spend the night in Kamianets-Podilskyi. On the first day—the Mlynky and Optimistic Caves; on the second—Atlantis and Crystal. Each cave has its own structure and unique features, so the route allows you to compare different types of underground formations in a single trip.

Transcarpathia and the Carpathians: waterfalls, lakes, and multi-day tours

Transcarpathia and the Carpathian region offer itineraries where waterfalls are combined with castles, thermal springs, wine tastings, and mountain pastures.

The one-day tour “Lake Synevyr and Shipit Waterfall” from Lviv covers two iconic natural sites.

Participants will see the Shipit Waterfall, which is listed among the seven natural wonders of Ukraine, take photos at the Synevyr Pass with panoramic views of the Carpathians, visit the Brown Bear Rehabilitation Center, and take a walk to Lake Synevyr within the national park.

For those who want to spend more time in Transcarpathia, there is a four-day tour “Transcarpathia: Uzhhorod, Lake Synevyr, Shipit Waterfall, Thermal Springs, and Castles”. The itinerary begins in Mukachevo and includes wine tasting at the “Chizay” chateau, a visit to the “Zhayvoronok” thermal springs, a hike up Mount Makovytsia, a walk to Lake Synevyr and Shipit Waterfall, as well as tours of Palanok Castle, the Schönborn Palace, and Uzhhorod Castle. The last day is set aside for a sightseeing walk through Uzhhorod—from the embankment with Europe’s longest linden tree alley to the atmospheric Korzo Street.

Another four-day itinerary is “Weekend Tour: Summer Carpathian Vibe” based in Yaremche. On the first day, participants get a complimentary city tour, including a visit to the Probi Waterfall and the Carpathian National Park’s wildlife enclosure. The second day features relaxation by the pool and an evening trip to Bukovel, the “Hutsul Land” ethnopark, and Lake Molodosti, with dinner at a Hutsul tavern. The third day features an excursion to the Zhenetsky Huk and Narinetsky waterfalls via the Zalim Mountain Pasture, featuring a 300-year-old spruce tree and a suspension bridge. Day four — a jeep tour to Mount Makovytsia to a mountain farm with a tasting of Hutsul cheeses (budz, vurda, brynza), a zip line, and a high swing on the Dykanka mountain pasture with a panoramic view of the Carpathians.
