Chernivtsi is a tourist pearl, an educational center and a reliable humanitarian rear of Ukraine
The charming city in the west of the country, Chernivtsi, fascinates every tourist with its scenery and history. Learn more about the unique locations and how life in the city changed during the full-scale war
Chernivtsi is a cultural and educational center, the architectural pearl of Bukovyna, the Ukrainian Paris. Many have already heard about this wonderful place, some have been here on a trip, some have studied. However, the war changed the life of every Ukrainian in every city. Chernivtsi, which became a reliable refuge for many refugees with the beginning of the full-scale invasion, did not escape the changes.
History of Chernivtsi. How does the city live during the war?
Chernivtsi is located in the south-west of Ukraine and occupies an area of 153 square kilometers. Today, it is considered one of the safest cities in Ukraine, as far as it is possible in the conditions of war.
Before the start of the full-scale invasion, the city was home to more than two hundred and sixty thousand people. Currently, this number may be higher. In the first week of the war, Chernivtsi became a refuge for many internally displaced persons from different cities. The local authorities announced a possible shelter for twenty thousand people, but, unfortunately, a much larger number of Ukrainians had to flee. Officially, 40,000 IDPs are registered in the city, but in reality they are much more.
The city is a cultural and scientific and educational center of Ukraine. In Chernivtsi, you can get a higher education in as many as seven universities. However, the main pearl of the region is the Chernivtsi National University named after Yuriy Fedkovich - one of the oldest classical universities in Ukraine. The architecture and interiors of the university are impressive, the university is often called the Ukrainian Hogwarts. The complex was built in the 19th century as the residence of the metropolitans of Bukovyna and Dalmatia, according to the project of the famous Austrian architect Josef Glavka. Since 2011, the university building has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The historic streets of Chernivtsi also deserve special attention: Turetska ploshcha - a small square with a deep well in the middle of the street, a botanical garden and a real find for connoisseurs of Ukrainian history - the Jewish cemetery. Fans of chamber music should visit the local organ hall.
Chernivtsi will really be able to surprise you, so everyone who moved to Bukovyna because of the war or will be in Chernivtsi in transit is invited to the "Sightseeing tour of Chernivtsi". In 3 hours, you will get to know the main sights of the city and learn how the war affected the life of Chernivtsi. After all, the residents of Chernivtsi continue to resume work and continue to work in the conditions of war.
Chernivtsi is an indomitable city
In addition to local institutions and enterprises in Chernivtsi, the Starobil Medical College, which moved here from Luhansk Oblast, an orphanage from Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, and many more forcibly displaced institutions that were forced to flee from rocket fire from their hometowns and villages continue to operate.
Unfortunately, after massive hits to critical infrastructure facilities, power supply became scarce in Chernivtsi as well. However, the residents of the city, like all residents of Ukraine, save electricity for the fastest restoration of the network throughout the country.
Chernivtsi is an indomitable city, because real heroes live and work here. On November 15, at the Chernivtsi Cardiocenter, surgeons had to operate on people while the operating rooms were connected to generators. Doctors skillfully operated on a man who arrived at the hospital with a heart attack.
Chernivtsi is a reliable, deep rear of our country: humanitarian, industrial and transit. We invite everyone who wants to learn more about Chernivtsi to our YouTube channel or to the fabulous trips "Chernivtsi - city break" and "Chernivtsi, Kamianets-Podilskyi and Khotyn".
