In March 2023, the European Union introduced common fines and regulations for all drivers in EU member states. Find out more about the changes
The European Union is preparing to change the rules and fines for drivers. According to the new directive, which is to be implemented soon, the changes will apply to all EU member states. Read more about what drivers can expect below.
How will the new rules work?
As reported by the Telegram channel "Germany/Ukraine/Refugee", according to the 4th EU Directive, which is being prepared, if a driver's license is taken away in one of the European countries, for example, France or Italy, he or she will not be able to drive in other countries.
That is, if you make a mistake in one place, the punishment will follow you and spread to all EU countries. The same is true for penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances.
This is despite the fact that different countries have adopted different permissible ppm limits for driving. It is planned to establish common EU limits for alcohol consumption and harmonize penalty point systems in different countries. The period for which a driver's license will be suspended will be the same.
To make the fines uniform, the European Union will need a common database for drivers that will be accessible to police in all EU member states.

When will the new rules come into effect?
The fourth driving license directive will be published towards the end of March. After publication, the document will have to go through the process of approval by the EU Parliament.
It is expected to take several months, possibly until the end of 2023.
Once the directive is approved, EU countries will have to implement it on the ground. First, the relevant laws and regulations must be adopted.
We remind you! Many Ukrainians were forced to go abroad and lost their car registration in Ukraine. In addition, the war has not affected the rules for registering new vehicles. Read more about car registration deadlines, how to return the registration and the cost of services here.
