The right to reside in Austria for Ukrainians is confirmed by an identity card for displaced persons (Blue Card). Find out more about how to extend your legal stay in the country
Refugees from Ukraine who decided to seek asylum in Austria were granted temporary protection until March 3, 2023. Realizing that the war is ongoing, the Austrian government extended the status for another year. Here's what you need to do to stay in the country legally.

IDP certificate and the right to reside in Austria
Firstly, it should be noted that there is no need to apply for an extension of the right to reside in Austria. The same applies to the IDP card. If your documents were valid before March 3, 2023, they will be automatically extended until March 4, 2024. You will receive the new certificate by mail from the Federal Office for Foreigners (BFA).
Important! If you have changed your place of residence, please inform the BFA. You should also be attentive to your personal data: if you see a mistake in your name, surname, date of birth, etc., write to the BFA. The institution may contact you to clarify the information.
Deadlines for obtaining the certificate
After March 3, 2023, you can also get a new document. A few weeks without a residence permit does not deprive you of the right to temporary protection. You are allowed to leave and return to Austria even with an expired document, as your right to reside in the country is still valid.
The Federal Office for Foreigners plans to finish sending out the certificates in mid-March. If you are registered with the office but have not received a new document, you can contact a representative of the office.
We would like to add that the certificate is sent by registered mail, so it can be received by both the owner and the authorized representative. If you do not pick up the document at the post office within the specified period (this information will be sent to you), it will return to the sender. In this case, please contact the relevant BFA office and agree on how and where to collect the document.
Leaving Austria for another country
Before you leave Austria, you must notify the Federal Office and mail your displaced person's ID card. Find the address of the office here.
We remind you! Refugees from Ukraine can stay in Austria in their own car. However, the vehicle must be registered. Read more about how to do this, when you can avoid registration and whether you need to exchange your driver's license in the country in our article.
