It's been over a year since tens of thousands of Ukrainians have been abroad. Refugees miss their home country and home, so they want to visit Ukraine at least for a short time. Some countries have imposed restrictions on travel: if a refugee crosses the border, he or she may lose temporary protection status. We will tell you about whether Canada allows Ukrainians to travel home and back.

Does the CUAET program allow you to leave Canada?

Ukrainians who are in Canada under the CUAET program can travel to and from Ukraine during the validity period of their visa.

Documents for returning to Canada

To re-enter Canada, a Ukrainian must have a passport and a valid visa. The presence or absence of other documents (for example, a work permit or proof of receipt of financial benefits) does not matter.

Peculiarities of crossing the Canadian border

A Canadian visa does not guarantee that you will be allowed to enter the country. It gives you permission to fly to Canada and apply for entry to a border guard officer. The term "application" should not confuse you, because in Canadian law, the intention to cross the Canadian border is considered an application.

A border guard officer may reject your application and refuse to allow you to enter Canada. Such cases are rare, but we recommend that you keep this possibility in mind. The border officer makes the decision independently, and the main reason for the refusal is the doubt that the foreigner will fulfill the conditions of stay in Canada. We would like to add that a criminal record and forged documents also make a foreigner "inadmissible".

If necessary, you must clearly explain the purpose of your stay and know the grounds for legal residence in the country.

To recap, it is prohibited to:

 work without a work permit;

 stay in Canada for longer than the permitted period;

 not having a financially viable livelihood.

Will my work permit be revoked?

Your work permit will continue to be valid. That is, you will be able to work as you did before you left the country. However, keep in mind that a valid work permit is not a basis for entering the country and does not replace a visa.

We would like to add that all Ukrainians who have found refuge in Canada must meet travel and visa requirements, as well as undergo biometric data verification. Learn more about biometric data collection for entry to Canada here.
