Zelenskyy's visit to the US and conversation with Biden: will this week be decisive for Ukraine?
Table of contents
Congressional negotiations will soon take place in the United States to decide on further financial and military support for Ukraine. And Zelenskyy will visit the White House on the eve of this decision. Find out why the President of Ukraine is going to see Biden and whether his visit will be decisive for the country
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has begun another tour of Western countries. The first country on the list was Argentina, where the President of Ukraine had the honor of attending the inauguration of Argentina's new President Javier Milea.
This trip brought many good results, as Zelenskyy had the opportunity to meet and communicate with many leaders. Moreover, the President of Ukraine had a brief but rather tense conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a man who threatens to block Ukraine's accession to the EU.
At the same time, today, December 12, Mr. Zelenskyy will be receiving a visit from the White House. And on December 14, EU leaders are scheduled to meet in Brussels to give the green light to official negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU. So, this week may indeed be crucial for the country.
Why the president unexpectedly traveled to the United States and what to expect from this trip is discussed further in the article.
Why did Zelenskyy go to the United States?
Volodymyr Zelenskyy is likely to try to save the $60 billion defense aid package from the United States. After all, the issue of aid to Ukraine is now closely intertwined with the internal party politics of the United States and has been blocked for several weeks.
Thus, on December 12, Joe Biden will receive Mr. Zelenskyy at the White House. It is also known that the President of Ukraine has been invited to meet with senators and the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Mike Johnson.
Analysts expect that Volodymyr Zelenskyy will try to convince his partners of the need to adopt this aid package in the near future, as it is a matter of survival for Ukraine.
At the same time, the President of Ukraine expressed confidence that the country would be able to overcome the pause in US aid during an interview with Latin American media. And the planned talks should help in this regard.
At the same time, the President's Office said that the conversation with Biden at the White House will focus on ensuring the unity of the United States, Europe, and the world around support for Ukraine. In particular, they will talk about continuing defense cooperation and joint production of weapons and air defense systems.
The White House also emphasized the importance of the meeting between the presidents:
"To underscore the United States' commitment to support the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against russia's brutal invasion. As russia escalates its missile and drone strikes against Ukraine, the leaders will discuss Ukraine's urgent needs and the vital continued U.S. support at this critical time," said White House spokesperson Karin Jean-Pierre.

Why is US aid at risk?
The fact is that the issue of aid to Ukraine has become a lever of influence in the United States. However, the problem is not that the Republicans are directly opposed to supporting the country, because the main factor lies in the domestic political situation. For example, the issues of changing migration laws and securing the Mexican border are fundamental for Congress. In particular, Republicans are demanding more money for border security between the US and Mexico.
Republicans insist that the flow of migrants should be radically limited. And to exert influence, they use not only Ukraine, but also Israel and Taiwan, tying funding for these measures to security assistance to other countries.
At the same time, they note that they will support an aid package for Ukraine, but only on their own terms. That is, only if measures are taken to resolve the situation on the border with Mexico.
What will be the outcome of Zelenskyy's visit and whether US leaders will be able to overcome the domestic crisis and continue to support Ukraine will be known in the near future.
We remind you! The Ukrainian counteroffensive failed to achieve the expected result, despite loud statements and optimistic planning. Read how Ukraine and the United States planned the counteroffensive, why expectations were not met, what went wrong, and what it led to in our previous article.
