Electricity, water, gas and minimum wage: how prices and payments will change in 2024

The new year will bring Ukrainians some changes in the sphere of payments. There is also updated information about possible changes in utility tariffs. Learn more about what Ukrainians should expect from monetary allowances in 2024

With the arrival of the new year, a number of changes affecting key aspects of everyday life of Ukrainian citizens have come into force. Electricity, water supply, gas tariffs, as well as the minimum wage - all these factors have a significant impact on the financial situation of the population.


We tell you how these changes will affect the budgets of citizens in 2024 and what trends can be expected in the sphere of prices and social payments.

Gas and electricity prices


According to Oleksiy Chernyshev, Head of Naftogaz of Ukraine, gas and gas supply prices in 2024 will not change until the end of the heating season.


As of today, the gas price in Ukraine is UAH 7.96 per cubic metre of gas. 


As for electricity tariffs, the prices for these services are also not planned to increase until the end of the heating season. Currently, electricity prices for households are UAH 2.64/kWh. The tariff for light was raised from 1 June 2023, since then it has remained unchanged. 


Pension in Ukraine


From 1 January 2024 in Ukraine increased the amount of pension payments. So, this year the minimum pension will be 2361 UAH, and the maximum - 23610 UAH.


Also pension supplements have increased to 292 UAH per month, and supplementary payments for single pensioners - up to 944 UAH.


Pension payments will be changed in three stages:


- In January 2024, pension payments will increase for recipients of minimum and maximum pensions due to an increase in the subsistence minimum (2361 UAH). Pension payments will increase to UAH 2,361 and UAH 23,610 respectively.

- In January and July 2024 will recalculate pensions for people who suffered from the Chernobyl disaster or at the age of 65, who have the required amount of insurance experience. First, the minimum pension payments for these categories of persons will increase to 2840 UAH, and then to 3200 UAH.

- All pensions will be indexed in March.


In addition, from 1 January the required insurance length of service has increased. Now to receive a retirement pension from the age of 60 it is necessary to have a minimum of 31 years of insurance experience, for the appointment of a pension at 63 years of age the required length of service is from 21 to 31 years, at 65 years of age - from 15 to 21 years.

Living wage


Since the new year, the subsistence minimum has also increased. From 1 January it is 2920 UAH per person. 


The amount of the subsistence minimum is:


- for children under 6 years of age - 2563 UAH;

- for children from 6 to 18 years - 3196 UAH;

- for able-bodied persons - 3028 UAH;

- for persons who have lost the ability to work - 2361 UAH.


Minimum wage


The minimum wage in Ukraine, as well as many other payments, also went up. This year it is planned to increase the minimum wage in two stages:


- The first stage - from 1 January the minimum wage will be 7100 UAH.

- The second stage - from 1 April the minimum wage will increase to UAH 8000.


As for the hourly wage, from 1 January it changed to 42.6 UAH per hour, and from 1 April it will increase to 48 UAH per hour.


However, the minimum wage is subject to personal income tax (18%) and military levy (1.5%), so the minimum wage per employee is 5734 UAH from 1 January and 6461 UAH from 1 April 2024.


Social benefits for a child


The main changes occurred in the sphere of alimony payments and assistance to single mothers.


Thus, from 1 January the minimum subsistence minimum is 2563 UAH for children under 6 years old and 3196 UAH for children from 6 to 18 years old. Therefore, the minimum amount of alimony (50%) has changed in the following way:


- 1281 UAH for children up to 6 years old;

- 1598 UAH for children from 6 to 18 years old.


Maternity allowance for unemployed women registered with the Employment Centre as unemployed in 2024 is UAH 757.


At the same time, the amount of childbirth allowance in 2024 does not change and amounts to UAH 41280. The first 10320 UAH are paid at once, and the rest - in equal instalments (860 UAH each) during the next 36 months.


As for the assistance to single mothers, in 2024 it is provided in the amount equal to the difference between 100% of the subsistence minimum for a child.


The maximum amount of the benefit is:


- 2563 UAH per child up to 6 years old;

- 3196 UAH for a child from 6 to 18 years old;

- 3028 UAH per child from 18 to 23 years old (subject to in-patient training in the ZVO).
