From September 2024, all Ukrainian children living in Poland will have to go to local educational institutions. The relevant order is being worked out by the country's government. We will tell you about the necessary documents and procedures that need to be done in order to enroll a Ukrainian child in a Polish school
It is very important that children and young people get an education. Young Ukrainians who left for Poland with their parents because of the war can enroll in one of the local schools to continue their education. How to do it? Let's talk further.
General overview of the education system in Poland
The system of compulsory education in Poland covers children aged 7 to 18 years. It is divided into primary and secondary and is obtained free of charge.
In which class will the child be enrolled in Poland?
The total number of years of schooling in Ukraine determines in which grade of primary or secondary school your child will continue his education. That is, if a student studied in primary school in Ukraine, then in Poland he must continue primary education in a class that corresponds to Ukrainian.
The duration of education in Ukraine and the class to which the child will go in Poland will be determined on the basis of documents or an application.
Do Ukrainian children need to know Polish to go to school?
A Ukrainian child does not need to know the language in order to continue his education in a Polish school. For students who do not know enough Polish, the school organizes additional free Polish lessons. Preparatory electives are also created at the school.
Who can enroll a child in school in Poland?
According to Polish law, one of the parents or legal guardians of the child, i.e. a person entrusted with the care of the child by the court, can enroll a child in school in Poland.
If the student has already turned 18 years old, he has the right to enter high school independently.

How to enroll a child in school in Poland?
- At the first stage, parents need to choose the school to which they plan to enroll their child. The list of educational institutions is available in the Register of Schools and Educational Institutions. Also, to choose an institution, you can apply to the municipality of your place of residence or directly to the educational institution.
- The second stage – prepare the necessary package of documents: PESEL, passport (if available) or the child's birth certificate, residence contract, information about the child's academic performance, etc.
However, it is worth noting that this is only a recommended list of documents. Usually, Ukrainian children are enrolled in Polish schools without most of them, but only with a passport and a statement from one of the parents.
- Visit the educational institution and submit an application for admission of your child to the chosen school. It can also be done online.
How to apply to a Polish school online?
You can also contact the school online, for this, find the school's website and contacts online. Experts still recommend applying online by writing to the school's e-mail address, because in the event of a refusal, it will be officially recorded and explained.
Your request can be made as follows:
"I, Tetyana Shevchenko, the mother of Veronika Shevchenko, who studied in Ukraine in the 6th grade, in connection with the military actions in Ukraine, live in Poland. Please consider accepting my child at your school."
The main document you will need to enroll your child in a Polish school online is the Profil zaufany (trusted profile). Usually, parents receive it after they have legally registered their stay in Poland. It is with the help of Profil zaufany that you will be able to confirm your identity online, which will be necessary when you decide to send your child to school.
