From 1 January 2024, registration of Ukrainian cars in the Czech Republic became mandatory. Ignoring this law entails administrative liability for the driver. We will tell you how to register a car in the Czech Republic and what you need to do for this in the article below.

Registration of a Ukrainian car in the Czech Republic

Newly arrived refugees have 7 days to register a car with Ukrainian licence plates from the date of obtaining temporary protection or a tolerance visa.

You can find out more about the most convenient routes for travelling from Ukraine to the Czech Republic by car here.

The registration procedure does not involve replacing the number plates with Czech ones: after successful registration, Ukrainian drivers can continue to drive cars with Ukrainian number plates.

The registration procedure is necessary not only to increase control over foreign vehicles, but also to improve the regulation of traffic violations committed by Ukrainian drivers, as the registration requires the address of actual residence.

Keep in mind that ignoring the mandatory registration of a Ukrainian car in the Czech Republic entails administrative liability in the form of a fine of CZK 30,000. The fine can be issued by the Czech police immediately after stopping an unregistered car.

To register a Ukrainian vehicle, you need to contact any municipal administration with extended powers. You can find the addresses of the institutions in the Czech Republic here.

What documents do I need to register a car in the Czech Republic?

Car insurance in the Czech Republic

To legally drive a car with Ukrainian licence plates in the Czech Republic, you must have a valid Green Card insurance policy. For more details on why Ukrainians cannot take out Czech insurance for their cars, please follow this link.

The Green Card is an international insurance policy for motorists. If you have ever driven your own car out of Ukraine, you know that this policy is mandatory for crossing the border. However, it is also valid in the Czech Republic. The main thing is to keep track of the policy's validity period and renew it in time.

The insurance company will compensate for any damage that may be caused abroad by a car with a Green Card policy. It's important to remember that damage caused to third parties is covered, but the coverage does not apply to the person responsible for the accident.

You can buy a Green Card in both the Czech Republic and Ukraine. However, insurance abroad will cost much more.

Therefore, it is better to buy insurance online, as it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can apply for a Green Card from a licensed insurer. The calculator allows you to calculate the exact price of the policy individually for your vehicle. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters.

Just to remind you. The Czech Republic is currently home to a large number of Ukrainians, many of whom came to the country by car. However, due to various circumstances, Ukrainians may need a document recovery service.
