Since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, Moldova has received more than 1.4 million Ukrainians, of whom about 115,000 have remained in the country. One of the most important aspects for refugees is finding a job. Statistics show that most of them - about 60% of Ukrainians - are already employed in this country. We will tell you what obstacles refugees face when looking for work and what are the conditions of employment.

Ukrainian men find it easier to find work in Moldova than women. About 82% of men were able to find employment, while among women, this figure is only 35%. Unemployment among Ukrainian women is much higher - 49% compared to 10% among men.

The main areas in which refugees are employed include construction, agriculture, hotel and restaurant business.

What challenges do Ukrainians face?

According to a study by the International Organisation for Migration, the results of which are published by Stiripesurse, many Ukrainians face challenges when looking for work. The main difficulties include:

- Lack of vacancies: Over 60% of respondents reported a lack of jobs.

- Language barrier: 49% of Ukrainians cited language problems as a major obstacle.

- Lack of information: About a third of respondents said they lacked information on the employment process and working conditions for refugees.

Employment conditions for Ukrainians in Moldova

Beneficiaries of temporary protection in Moldova can be legally employed in the country without the need to obtain a temporary residence permit, provided they register with the local branch of the National Employment Agency.

If a person has not been granted temporary protection status, he or she needs an official work permit in Moldova, which can be obtained through an employer. The process of obtaining this permit is more complicated and requires additional documents, including a contract with the employer and proof of legal status in the country.
