Some countries within the Schengen area have temporarily tightened the rules for crossing their borders due to a significant increase in migrants. We will tell you which countries have tightened the rules and how.

As you know, the Schengen area allows free movement within it, but the current situation requires additional security measures.

Which countries have tightened controls?

France has resumed control at its borders with Schengen countries until 31 October, citing the threat of terrorist attacks.

Germany tightened border controls on 16 September, which will last for at least six months. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the scope and duration of inspections will depend on local conditions and transport infrastructure, allowing for flexible changes in measures depending on the situation.

Italy has extended border controls with Slovenia until 18 December.

Slovenia, for its part, introduced checks on its borders with Croatia and Hungary until 21 December, citing the deteriorating security situation.

Austria has introduced temporary checks on its borders with the Czech Republic and Slovakia until 15 October, and with Hungary and Slovenia until 11 November 2024.

Denmark is conducting enhanced checks on land and sea transport from Germany until 11 November. The main reasons for these measures are terrorism threats related to the conflict in Gaza, the 2023 Quran desecration, and the risk of espionage from russia.

What will change for Ukrainians?

It is worth noting that Ukrainians may face longer checks when entering the above countries, which will directly affect the time spent at border controls.

Particular attention should be paid to delays during major holidays.

To avoid problems at the border, you should have all the documents required to enter a particular country. By the way, the list of such documents includes a Green Card, which is mandatory for tourists by car. You can apply for a Green Card on our website.

We remind you! Norway has tightened the rules for granting collective protection status to Ukrainians. There are already cases when Ukrainian citizens have been denied protection. Read here to find out from whom applications may be rejected.
