The choice of the type of insurance for a foreigner in Ukraine depends on the status of stay and the status of the car. There are several ways to insure your vehicle. Read about it in our article
The issue of car insurance in Ukraine is important for foreigners, as the legislation and requirements may differ from the usual ones. In Ukraine, there are two main types of car insurance that foreigners can use. Let's talk about them.
Car insurance for foreigners: when do you need it, where and how do you get it?
Motor third party liability insurance is a compulsory insurance of civil liability that covers damages caused to third parties in the event of an accident.
CTPCI covers:
▪️ Material damage. The insurance company indemnifies other road users for damages caused as a result of an accident.
▪️ Damage to the health of victims. Covers medical expenses for third parties injured in an accident.
It is important to know that this insurance does not cover personal expenses for the repair of your car and injuries to the driver - these issues are covered by a separate CASCO.
For foreigners who have a residence permit and cars with Ukrainian licence plates, motor third party liability insurance is available on the same terms as for Ukrainian citizens.
How do I get it?
First of all, you need to understand that in order to take out a motor third party liability insurance policy, your car must be registered in Ukraine and have Ukrainian licence plates.
First, the driver needs to choose an insurer. For example, on the Visit Ukraine portal, you can find a good option for CTP insurance. Another advantage is that you don't have to go to offices, you just need to apply for it online.
You will need the following documents: passport and residence permit; car registration certificate in your name; identification code (if any).

Mini-CTP for foreigners without a residence permit
If you arrive in Ukraine by a personal car with foreign registration and do not have a residence permit, you cannot get a standard motor third party liability insurance. However, mini-CTPCI is available, which provides basic protection for foreign cars in Ukraine.
How to take out mini-CTPCI?
You can also find this type of insurance on the Visit Ukraine portal. In general, drivers are offered three mini-CTPCI packages: economy, basic, maximum, and military risks.
For example, the maximum package includes:
▪️ Complete destruction of the vehicle in case of passive war risks.
▪️ Costs for a tow truck.
▪️ Road traffic accident in the presence of another party to the event.
▪️ Complete destruction of the vehicle in the event of a natural disaster.
Here are the documents required to take out mini-CTP: passport; certificate of registration of the car in your country; period of stay in Ukraine (usually indicated when applying for the policy).
We remind you! In Ukraine, compulsory MTPL insurance is a prerequisite for the legal use of a vehicle. However, for veterans and some other categories of military personnel, the law provides for special benefits that exempt them from the need to take out motor third party liability insurance under certain circumstances. Earlier, we talked about the exceptions and who they apply to.
