The European Union is launching an ambitious project to build a high-speed rail link between Berlin and Kyiv. According to the plan, the first section of the route from Berlin to Warsaw should be operational by 2030. The extension of the line to Kyiv is envisaged as part of the next stage of development of the Trans-European Transport Network TEN-T, which is scheduled to be implemented by 2040.

This was announced by Apostolos Tsitsikostas, a candidate for the post of European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, during a hearing at the Committee on Transport and Tourism.

Modernization of the EU railway system: challenges and necessary changes

The future European Commissioner recognized the technical challenges of increasing the speed of rail traffic not only in Ukraine but also in some eastern EU countries. Despite the significant cost of the project, its implementation is a priority task for strengthening transport links within the EU.

“I will make sure that this is a top priority, that this network is developed... I will work very closely with Germany, with Poland, with Ukraine,” Tsitsikostas said.

In addition, the development of a comprehensive plan to connect EU capitals and major cities by high-speed rail, including night trains, was announced. An important component of the modernization will be the introduction of a unified digital ticketing and sales system, which is planned to be implemented during the first year of Tsitsikostas' mandate.

MEPs also drew attention to the need to optimize the language issue in rail transportation. Currently, train drivers are required to speak the languages of all countries along the route, which leads to forced stops of freight trains at the borders to change drivers. Therefore, it is proposed to introduce English as an auxiliary language for drivers.

The Berlin-Kyiv high-speed train project is part of the EU's large-scale strategy for developing transport infrastructure aimed at strengthening ties between EU member states and partners.

By the way, the Polish carrier SKPL will launch a new train from Poland to Ukraine by the end of 2024. The train schedule from Warsaw is available here.
