Anyone with a health insurance policy in Europe has the right to receive quality healthcare at the insurer's expense. We will tell you how it works, what benefits it provides, and how to choose the best policy to save your money and health.

Is health insurance mandatory for traveling abroad?

Although health insurance is no longer mandatory for visiting Schengen countries, a health insurance policy is generally required for traveling abroad, as stated in Article 16 of the Law of Ukraine "On Tourism". The same is stated in the European Parliament's regulations, namely that every non-resident of the EU and every applicant for entry to the Schengen area must have health insurance that can cover all unforeseen health expenses in the EU.

The other thing is that at the border and airports, the insurance policy is rarely asked to be presented, especially for Ukrainian refugees who travel abroad every day. People take advantage of the opportunity not to buy a mandatory policy, save money, and then pay three times more for treatment in a foreign country. In addition, an insurance policy inspection in a particular country can happen at any time, as well as the services of the policy itself can be required at any time. Therefore, be aware of your health and the health of your loved ones.

Mandatory insurance is:

- When traveling with children;

- During extreme recreation;

- When visiting countries with which Ukraine does not have a visa-free regime;

- When visiting countries with a high risk of insured events.

What does health insurance abroad protect you from? Let's explain in numbers

Medical services abroad, in most countries of the world, are provided to non-residents on a paid basis, and are usually quite expensive. For example, the cost of a consultation with a general practitioner in the EU starts at 30 euros, and an ambulance call will cost at least 600 euros! A dentist in EU countries will cost an average of 250 euros, and if you need to have a tooth extracted urgently, it will cost about 1000 euros. Whereas the average cost of health insurance for foreign travel is about 1.5 euros per day, and such insurance is able to cover most force majeure cases.

It should be added that in many countries, medicines can only be bought in a pharmacy with a prescription, and in order to get it, you need to visit a doctor, who needs to be paid at least for the appointment. Therefore, even a minor cold abroad can be very expensive and difficult to treat.

What does health insurance cover for Ukrainians abroad:

- Urgent outpatient or inpatient care;

- Transportation to a medical facility;

- Evacuation to Ukraine, if it is appropriate for treatment;

- Payment for medicines;

Depending on the needs of the client and the insurance option, the list of options can be expanded.

Also, the owners of the insurance medical policy have a number of advantages for a comfortable and safe trip or for a long stay abroad:

- Possibility to visit a doctor in all medical institutions of the host country at any time during the stay;

- Possibility of remote consultation with a Ukrainian doctor and his/her influence on the treatment process, if it is appropriate and convenient for the patient;

- Possibility to expand the list of services, including compensation for the treatment of chronic diseases, injuries during sports, emergency dental care, etc;

Before traveling , it is important to remember that in some countries, health insurance is mandatory in order to go on vacation, to work, or to simply get a visa.

Restrictions of health insurance for the Schengen area

Standard health insurance for Ukrainians abroad, and in particular, in the Schengen area, has some general restrictions that you should be aware of. These are:

- Treatment of cancer and other serious diseases, including HIV;

- Pregnancy care;

- Planned surgery;

- Treatment of chronic diseases (unless it is an extended health insurance for Europe);

- Cases when the client suffered damage while under the influence of alcohol or drugs;

- Cases of self-inflicted injury by the client;

At thesame time, cases that lead to a direct threat to human life are covered by most insurance policies.

Earlier, we wrote about why Ukrainians in Europe need health insurance in accordance with European standards. You can also read about it in this article.

Health insurance in times of war

It often seems that insurance is not necessary in times of war, as many Ukrainians have gone abroad, obtained temporary residence/ temporary protection documents and gained access to free healthcare for refugees. However, firstly, not all refugees have received the appropriate status, and secondly, insured persons still have a number of advantages, the main one being that they can visit a doctor without queues. After all, to see a doctor in Europe, an uninsured patient has to stand in line, and most often they will have to wait for several weeks or even months, which in most cases is simply impossible. Having insurance will allow you to see a doctor in any country in Europe and most countries of the world quickly and conveniently.

Also, in Europe, any remote doctor's consultations are paid, but the costs will be reimbursed if you have health insurance. That is, if you need an emergency small consultation, this type of appointment will come in handy, and the costs will be covered by the insurance company.

Theconclusion is unequivocal, and it is that an insurance policy is a guarantee of your safety and a peaceful stay outside Ukraine. To protect yourself from troubles abroad and to be calm for yourself and your loved ones, Visit Ukraine recommends taking out health insurance in advance.

Is it possible to travel to Europe without insurance?

The EU legislation does not clearly stipulate the issue of mandatory health insurance coverage. At the same time, the EU Visa Code and EU regulations require a health insurance policy, as does Ukrainian law when leaving Ukraine. However, border guards do not include an insurance policy in the list of required documents.
