Every day, hundreds of Ukrainian and foreign visitors come to the Carpathian ski resorts. Find out how to start the season right: choose the right equipment and clothing, take out insurance, and plan the best route
The ski season is in full swing in the Ukrainian Carpathians. A significant increase in average annual temperatures has not affected the popularity of Bukovel, Pylypets or Dragobrat, the highest mountain resort in Ukraine. Skiers and snowboarders come here in families and groups to test their skills, train and just relax. And for those who are new to winter activities, we have gathered the most important information to make your visit to the ski resort comfortable and safe. Read all about preparations for the season and the most popular tourist routes in Visit Ukraine's article.
How to prepare for the ski season?
To get ready for the season at one of the resorts in the Carpathians, you first need to take care of your equipment and insurance - these two factors ensure that you have a good time and feel safe.
Pack your equipment
1. Skis, ski poles and snowboards are your main tools for recreation. You also need to take care of your bindings: classic bindings are suitable for all ski boots.
2. Ski mask - it can be either two masks (for sunny weather with a polarising filter and yellow for foggy weather) or one with replaceable filters.
3. Helmet - the main guarantor of your safety in case of falls and collisions.
4. Back and wrist protection (for snowboarders, special protective shorts are also recommended).
5. Backpack for skiing - different for ski slopes, freeride, sky touring; if you like to ski off-piste, choose a backpack with a compartment for avalanche equipment.
6. Portable radio - necessary for large groups of tourists or skiers; perfectly withstand the cold, unlike standard mobile phones.
Where to get the equipment?
You can rent: skis, ski poles and snowboards; portable radio.
It is better to bring: a ski mask; protection for the back, legs and arms; a backpack for skiing.
Helmets can be rented, but we recommend bringing your own, as not all of them are suitable and comfortable enough.
What clothes do I need to buy before the trip?
- Thermal underwear;
- ski socks - several pairs;
- waterproof ski suit;
- hat and snood;
- Balaclava or a helmet;
- waterproof gloves - 2 pairs.
How to choose insurance for extreme holidays?
When you conclude an insurance contract, pay attention to the following details:
1. The contract should be focused on covering risks on the territory of Ukraine (NOT abroad).
2. The insurance covers standard risks, including emergency medical care and health insurance.
3. It is advisable to include skiing or snowboarding in the contract.
4 Prices for extreme insurance are higher because of the added risks.
