Power outage schedule 2024: where to check power outages in different regions of Ukraine

Due to massive Russian missile attacks on power plants in Ukraine, power outages are back in effect. Ukrenergo has published a list of official websites with blackout schedules by region of Ukraine. Find out more about where you can check the blackouts and why the real situation does not coincide with the published schedules

The occupying country has struck again at Ukrainian power plants and critical infrastructure. Over the past 3 months, Russian shelling has destroyed 9.2 GW of Ukrainian generation.

Unfortunately, the power system across the country has suffered large-scale damage. In this regard, we have created a schedule of power outages for regions across Ukraine. New schedules are applied during peak load hours - in the evening and in the morning.

Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, CEO of NPC Ukrenergo, emphasizes that power outages may be carried out throughout the summer, autumn and the whole next winter, as the power system does not have enough capacity to cover the evening peak consumption.

Earlier we reported that the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine plans to adopt a resolution on fair schedules of power outages for consumers.

Where can I find the blackout schedules?

Ukrenergo informs that the intervals and duration of daily power outages in different regions or individual settlements depend on the amount of critical infrastructure on their territory.

Ukrenergo determines only the limits of electricity consumption for each region, and the decision to develop and implement blackout schedules is made directly by regional power distribution companies.

Schedules of power outages in your region can be found in the consumer's office, on the official websites of regional power distribution companies, as well as on their social media pages.

In the previous article, we told you how to find a facility with a generator in your city during power outages.

What is the principle of power outages?

Currently, there are three types of outages.

The first type is localized accidents. There are no problems with electricity shortages, but mechanical breakdowns caused a blackout in the grid. This can happen almost every day across the country.

The second type is emergency outages. These situations affect large systems. They can be caused by a missile attack that destroys generation or cuts off the grid. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict or model such cases, so this is an unpredictable story.

The third type is planned outages, which can be predicted and prepared for. Such outages are used in case of a shortage of generation in the system. For example, Ukrenergo sees that a conditional 20% deficit is forecast for tomorrow, which is then distributed across the country.

All electricity consumers are divided into 2 large groups: household consumers + businesses and critical infrastructure that cannot be turned off. The first group is turned off according to schedules that are broken down by individual lines, not by consumers, so everyone is divided roughly equally by consumption per line.

Each line is part of a specific group, and distribution system operators turn these groups on and off according to planned outage schedules. Some networks are digitalized, so the shutdown is automatic. On some networks, employees have to do it manually.

Why do outages not coincide with the planned schedules?

There are several objective reasons for this. The first and most common one is rapid changes in consumption volumes. If we look at a basic example for understanding, there are two lines, and the task is to keep the power on 50/50, i.e. the same number of hours per day. At a certain point, one line needs to be turned off and the other turned on, but this does not happen at the same time, in one second, because it is very important to meet the limit.

The second possible reason is problems with the automation. In this case, specialists need to get to the destination and manually turn off or on the consumption. Unfortunately, the crew may be delayed or get into a traffic jam. Because of this, there is an operational backlash of about 30 minutes.

How can we help avoid blackouts?

While the shelling continues and damaged facilities are being repaired, the only way to avoid long-term and unpredictable power outages is to save money.

To do this, it is enough to shift the operation of boilers, heaters, dishwashers and washing machines to night hours and, if possible, to keep the electricity saving mode during the day.

We remind you! Installing a solar power plant will ensure energy independence, reduce electricity costs, and provide backup power in case of outages. Read more about prices, types of stations and other important details.
