The main rules of the road in Italy and the changes that will come into force in 2023
From January 1, 2023, fines for violations of traffic rules will increase in Italy. We are talking about basic traffic rules and innovations.
What fines will increase from 2023?
Fine for running a red light. Almost all traffic lights in Italy are equipped with cameras, so passing a red light is recorded automatically. The fine for such a violation will range from 167 to 655 euros.
Speeding. It is allowed to drive at a speed of up to 50 km/h in populated areas, 90 km/h outside the city limits, 110 km/h on secondary roads, and 130 km/h on expressways. Increasing the speed mode will cost 845 euros. And if the speed is 60 km/h higher than the permissible one, it will be necessary to pay 3382 euros.
Driving without insurance will cost you from 866 to 3464 euros. Therefore, we advise you to take out a Green Card insurance policy online at Ukrainian insurance companies in order to save money.
Please note that a fine of up to €350 can be paid at the scene of the offense in Italy. But if you commit a violation at night, the amount of the fine may be 30% higher.
Basic rules of the road in Italy
As in Ukraine, traffic here is on the right, and you can overtake only on the left. Traffic at roundabouts here is also the same as in Ukraine: priority is given to those "on the ring", but local motorists often ignore this rule. One-way street traffic is very common in the country, so we recommend that you study the route in advance.
In Italy, seat belts and always-on dipped beam headlights are mandatory outside of built-up areas.
You can't talk on the phone while driving, and you can't turn on the fog lights when the visibility is more than 50 meters.
In Italy, road signs are located in a special way - they are not installed directly, but at an angle to the desired street. There is also a special sign "Zona traffico limitato" - it limits the movement of private vehicles. Such signs can be installed in the historical centers of cities. The sign in Italian may indicate the days and times when traffic is prohibited: Lun - Monday, Mar - Tuesday, Mer - Wednesday, Gio - Thursday, Ven - Friday, Sab - Saturday, Dom - Sunday. The inscription "diurna" means daytime from 06:30 to 21:00, and "notturna" means nighttime from 21:00 to 06:30.
Also in Italy, as in many EU countries, there are toll roads and tunnels. This is a fairly common phenomenon here. Toll road travel can cost 5-7 euros per 100 kilometers. When entering such a road, we recommend keeping the received ticket. If you traveled less than 100 km, the amount to be paid will be less. However, traveling through tunnels is more expensive - from 15 euros.

The simultaneous stay of visitors in the hotel lobby not more than one person per 10 square meters of serviceable area is allowed.
