In 2023, a new procedure for keeping military records of men was approved in Ukraine. One of the clauses of the resolution obliges foreign embassies to inform Ukrainian citizens abroad about the start of a new conscription and to facilitate their return home if mobilization is taking place in the Motherland. After the changes in the legislation, society began to discuss the possible deportation of Ukrainians from the EU.

The other day, European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ilva Johanson said whether the European Union plans to deport Ukrainian men.

We tell you what Ukrainians living in the EU should expect.

Can EU countries expel Ukrainian men?

In the conditions of martial law, Ukrainians conscripted are prohibited from leaving the country. However, Ukrainian men manage to cross the border, sometimes even illegally.

We will remind you that earlier we already told about all the possible legal options for a Ukrainian man to go abroad under martial law. You can get acquainted here.

The majority of refugees remain in Europe and apply for temporary protection status. Also, many of our fellow citizens lived in the EU before the full-scale invasion and did not return to Ukraine after the start of the war. According to changes in Ukrainian legislation, these categories of men may face deportation.

However, according to the European Commissioner, the EU will not deport anyone against their will. That is, Ukrainian men currently living in Europe are not at risk of forced deportation.

Also, the European Union does not plan to restrict the entry of men from Ukraine. After all, for Europe, all Ukrainians who arrived in the region after the start of the full-scale invasion fall under the protection of the Directive on temporary protection.
