Ukrainian marines landed on the left bank of the Kherson region. What is known about Ukraine's counteroffensive near the Crimean peninsula?
Units of two Ukrainian marine brigades have taken over russian positions on the left bank of the Kherson region. Find out more about the successes of the AUF in southern Ukraine and whether this means a full-scale offensive on another section of the front
In recent weeks, russian "military commanders" have been massively reporting on the activity of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the left bank of the Kherson region. On October 18, at a press conference following his visit to China, putin himself announced that Ukraine had launched an offensive in the Kherson region. The Ukrainian authorities did not comment on the offensive in this area of the front, but the statements of the russian side were confirmed by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in its report of October 18.
What is known so far and is Ukraine really launching an offensive against Crimea from the left bank of the Kherson region?
ISW report: where did Ukrainian marines break through the defense and which positions have already been recaptured?
According to ISW's published data, Ukrainian fighters, consisting of two marine brigades, most likely company-sized, have crossed the Dnipro River and advanced north of Pishchanivka (14 kilometers east of Kherson and 3 kilometers from the Dnipro River) and to the village of Poymy (11 kilometers east of Kherson and 4 kilometers from the Dnipro River).

The russian authorities reported that two Ukrainian "assault groups" landed on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River and partially broke through the russian defense, "temporarily" occupying the entire Poima and the northern outskirts of Pishchanivka.
At the same time, putin said that "there is no result."
"They have launched a long-announced and expected counter-offensive, now on the Kherson direction. There is no result yet, but there are losses. There is no result, just like it was in the Zaporizhzhya and other directions," he said.

What are the prospects for Ukraine's counteroffensive in the Kherson region?
ISW analysts claim that the russian side is "concerned" about Ukraine's active actions in the Kherson region, as this activity is seen as part of a potential larger Ukrainian operation.
In addition, experts believe that the russians' concern is justified, as they are unable to repel a potential Ukrainian offensive across the Dnipro River in this area. This is primarily because the russian group on the left bank of the Kherson region is understaffed and has low morale.
"In recent months, the russian command has attracted a relatively larger number of elite units from the Kherson direction to support defense operations in Zaporizhzhia region," ISW experts note.
This means that all the potential troops that could have restrained the Ukrainian armed forces in Kherson region are now in the east, but even there their success in restraining them is very limited. After all, Ukrainian fighters are advancing south of Robotyne and Verbove and near Bakhmut and Andriivka. In addition, the russian offensive near Avdiivka has also stalled and has not had any strategic or tactical success.
We believe in the Victory and the Ukrainian Armed Forces!
We remind you! American ATACMS missiles have finally been delivered to Ukraine, and on October 17 they were used for the first time to attack russian military targets. Read more about how many and what modification of ATACMS Ukrainian forces received in our previous article.
