Ireland has announced a significant reduction in payments to Ukrainian refugees who will be living in government housing. According to the announcement of the Minister of Social Protection Heather Humphreys, quoted by extra.ie, the decision to reduce financial support will come into force next week.

Irish government to cut benefits for Ukrainians: what is known

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ireland has provided Ukrainian refugees with free housing and paid 220 euros a week to help them find work.

However, starting next week, refugees who settle in public housing will receive only 38.80 euros per week.

The government's decision to reduce the allowance was made against the backdrop of a growing migration crisis and housing shortage, which prompted the authorities to reduce the attractiveness of Ireland as a place of residence for Ukrainian refugees.

It is emphasized that after the announcement of the reduction in financial support, there has been a significant decrease in the number of newly arrived refugees - from more than 700 per week to 160 in February 2024.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar noted that continued support for refugees at this level is unacceptable.

He also added that Ukrainians who resort to finding accommodation on their own should not worry about a reduction in payments.

Remember. When planning a trip abroad, it is important to take out an appropriate insurance policy in advance. We recommend that you pay attention to health insurance, which, if necessary, can cover maintenance/treatment/diagnosis, etc. as well as injuries and accidents. Such insurance will allow you to be as protected as possible from any unforeseen situations. You can apply for an insurance policy on our portal by following this link.

We remind you!  The extension of temporary protection in the Czech Republic opens up the possibility for Ukrainians to travel and leave the country. It should be borne in mind that the absence of a new visa sticker may restrict border crossings. Read here whether Ukrainians are allowed to leave the Czech Republic before receiving a new visa.
