Ukraine has a rich history, hospitable local population, diverse culture and bright nature. For many years, tourists from different parts of the world have been attracted to this pearl of Eastern Europe.

In Ukraine, it was always possible to go to the sea and climb the mountains during one vacation without spending all your money on it. The war almost stopped the tourism industry of Ukraine. The industry has faced many challenges – closed airspace, political instability and unreliable security. However, despite this, Ukraine is adapting to new realities, reviving from the ashes and developing its tourism brand.

Is it possible to tour Ukraine in 2024 and where to go? Let's talk further.

A trip to Ukraine in 2024

In 2024, tourists will continue to come to Ukraine. However, nowadays such a trip combines getting to know the state's culture and memory tourism. Traveling through modern Ukraine, you should not only get to know its historical gems, but also take a tour of the cities destroyed by the Russian invasion. This is an unusual vacation, but also a good way for travelers to see the consequences of the war and understand how Ukrainians live in the conflict.

In order to get to know modern Ukraine as fully as possible, we advise you to visit the following places.

Lviv

Undoubtedly, one of the main pearls of Ukraine is Lviv - the colorful capital of Galicia, which can be discovered again and again. This is a medieval city with fabulous architecture, in which various cultures are closely intertwined, and its mystical legends impress even the most demanding tourists.

Lviv is the only Ukrainian city that is among the hundred most popular tourist destinations in the world. The largest number of architectural monuments in Ukraine is located here, as well as many interesting events and festivals. The historical center of Lviv is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

What to see in Lviv? Rynok Square, Lviv Opera House, Potocki Palace, the oldest Armenian church in Europe - the Armenian Church (1363), the Church of St. Nicholas (1292), which is considered the oldest church in Lviv, the High Castle, the Powder Tower, the Church of St. George.

Kyiv

The strong and bold capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, is the main gem for most travelers. Fascinating ancient churches, ancient buildings and modern towers, mystical places, beautiful parks and hospitable restaurants - you will not be able to stop admiring the beauty of the Ukrainian capital.

Kyiv is one of the oldest capitals of Europe. In 2024, the city turned 1542 years old. It has almost 2,000 monuments of nature, history and culture.

Podil is one of the most interesting and ancient districts of Kyiv. According to historians, in the first half of the 1st millennium BC there was already a settlement here, which was a trading center. There are also many mysterious and unusual sights in the city.

Undoubtedly, the ongoing war in Ukraine leaves a big mark on Kyiv. One can list for a long time the districts of the capital in which residential buildings, commercial real estate, infrastructure facilities, schools and kindergartens were damaged by rockets.

The enemy army planned to capture Kyiv in 3 days, but thanks to the professionalism of the Ukrainian military and the strength and courage of local self-defense, this did not happen.

What to see in Kyiv? Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Khreschatyk, Golden Gate, Mariinsky Park, Andriivskyi Uzviz, Ancient Podil, theaters (opera, puppet theater, others), museums (gold, water, folk art, miniatures, holograms, weapons and dozens of interesting museums and exhibitions).

Deoccupied cities of Kyiv region

The de-occupied cities of the Kyiv region are heroic territories that were among the first to be invaded by the Russian occupier in February 2022.

Irpin, Bucha, Gostomel - the names are already familiar to many indifferent inhabitants of the world. Two years ago, terrible things happened here - battles, shootings, torture. Currently, these towns of Kyiv region are gradually returning to the usual rhythm of life, but they preserve the memory of all those who fell victim to an insidious attack and a terrible war.

What to visit?

- The village of Romanivka (Irpin road) was the front and the Ukrainian defense line. It was through Romanivka that the road of life passed to the cities of Irpin, Bucha, Gostomel. There is also a legendary crossing of the Irpin River under a blown-up bridge, through which residents of Kyiv region were evacuated on foot.

- The Hero City of Irpin - the front line also passed here, and positions were located that changed hands in the area of the Giraffe shopping center. A landmark of the city is the cemetery of equipment that was destroyed in the battles for Irpin, shot during evacuation and burned as a result of airstrikes.

  - Bucha - the whole world saw the terrible shots of civilians shot on Yablunska Street. A column of about 30 units of Russian equipment was broken up on the nearby Vokzalny Street.

Mykolaiv

Mykolaiv is an important transport, educational, and industrial center in the South of Ukraine. The city is located on the shore of the Buzki estuary, on the peninsula formed by the confluence of the Southern Bug and Ingul, 65 km from the Black Sea.

The city got its name in honor of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. The first frigate built here was also named "Saint Nicholas". On the day of the official proclamation of the city, this frigate was launched.

Mykolaiv is a city of ships. The Shipbuilding Museum is the main tourist attraction of the city and the only shipbuilding museum in Ukraine. It is worth starting your journey through the city with a view of the ancient excavations located in the central part.

What to see in Mykolaiv? Mykolaiv Zoo, Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory, Yacht Club (founded in 1888, it is the oldest in Ukraine).

Ruined villages of Mykolaiv Oblast

The full-scale war did not bypass Mykolaiv Oblast either. The regional center became a real symbol of resistance, but many more combat events took place on the territory of the region. It was Voznesensk, a city north of Mykolaiv, that stopped the offensive, and the main events took place on the territory of the Snigurivska and Bashtan communities.

As part of your trip to Mykolaiv Oblast, visit several villages that were de-occupied or suffered from constant shelling. Such a trip will allow you to see with your own eyes the consequences of the war on the territory of Ukraine - a European state, as well as to communicate with the local population in order to find out how Ukrainians pass the trials that have fallen on their way.
