Language exam for Ukrainian doctors in Poland postponed until 2027: what will change?
Poland has extended the deadline for the language exam for Ukrainian doctors until 2027. Find out who is affected by the changes, what language proficiency level is required, and how this will impact doctors’ work
Ukrainian doctors working in Poland have been granted additional time to take the language exam. As reported by In Poland, citing the Polish Press Agency, the deadline for mandatory confirmation of Polish language proficiency has been extended by another year.
New deadlines for taking the language exam in Poland
The Polish Health Committee has adopted a corresponding amendment that changes the deadline for Ukrainian medical professionals. Previously, doctors working under a simplified employment procedure were required to take the language exam by May 1, 2026.
The new deadline is now May 1, 2027. This means that specialists have been given an additional 12 months to prepare for and take the B1-level exam.

Why was the decision to postpone made?
The main reason for the changes is practical difficulties in organizing the exams. Due to high demand and a limited number of spots at accredited centers, a significant number of doctors were physically unable to take the test on time.
Additionally, Polish authorities aim to avoid a shortage of medical staff in hospitals. Ukrainian doctors play a vital role in the country’s healthcare system, so a sudden restriction on their work could negatively impact access to medical services.
What language proficiency level is required for doctors?
According to the requirements, medical professionals must demonstrate proficiency in Polish at the B1 level. This is a basic intermediate level that allows them to:
● communicate with patients;
● understand medical documentation;
● work in a team with colleagues;
The additional year provides an opportunity not only to prepare for the exam but also to improve their actual language proficiency for comfortable work.
The extension of deadlines effectively allows Ukrainian medical professionals to continue working in Poland without the risk of losing their permit due to failing to take the exam on time. At the same time, this does not eliminate the requirement itself—the test must still be taken by the new deadline. Therefore, doctors should use this time as effectively as possible.
