Independence Day is a majestic national holiday celebrated not only in Ukraine but also around the world. Events dedicated to the most anticipated event in Ukrainian history will be held in every city, town and village. However, it is not only in Ukraine that Independence is celebrated. Forced migrants, diaspora communities - everyone wants to return home at least for a minute on this day. Read about the places that should be included in your holiday itinerary in this article.

How will Independence Day be celebrated in Ukraine?

Ukraine has many fascinating cities and towns that are worth travelling to during the Independence Day celebrations. However, we understand that the largest events will take place in cultural, commercial and transport centres. Unfortunately, such centres in eastern Ukraine are currently subject to military and security restrictions - visiting Kharkiv on 24 August involves risks, which has led to restrictions on Independence Day celebrations. So how will Independence Day be celebrated in Kyiv and Lviv?

Kyiv

From 22 to 25 August, the capital is hosting the interdisciplinary festival ‘About Ukrainian’, which focuses on highlighting the topic of state independence in various artistic fields. In 2024, the festival is being held offline for the first time and reflects the five key values of Ukrainian society: cinema represents courage, literature - freedom, visual artists - humour, musicians - sensitivity, and theatre - love.

By the way, on the occasion of the Independence Day of Ukraine, Ukrposhta is releasing a new stamp (yes, this is also one of the visual arts).

We recommend that fine art lovers visit the Central House of Artists these days. Currently, 300 works by Ukrainian artists from different regions are on display there. There is also an exhibition of paintings by Taras Shevchenko National Prize winners created since 1991.

Upon arrival in Kyiv, you should definitely visit one of the tours offered and see how Independence was created with your own eyes.

Lviv

Lviv residents are celebrating the Day of the Ukrainian Flag and Independence Day in a scientific way: the key event will be a lecture by public figure Yaroslav Kendzor, during which unique footage filmed during the proclamation of our country's independence on 24 August 1991 will be demonstrated. The event will take place on 24 August at 17:00 in the Town Hall courtyard.

Before that, everyone will be able to enjoy a performance by the orchestra of the Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi National Army Academy, scheduled for 15:00 on Rynok Square.

And from 20:45 to 22:00, everyone will be able to see a street performance by the Khvylya artistic association.

In Western Ukraine, tourists can visit not only Lviv. Each region has its own pearls. By the way, Independence Day is a good time to take a ‘step to the heights’ - literally. Join the Visit Ukraine campaign and climb Hoverla with your family.
