Ukrainians who received their driver's license before 2013 are advised to consider renewing it. This was stated by Roman Batsits, deputy head of the electronic services implementation department of the department for organizing registration activities and admission of drivers to drive vehicles of the MIA's Main Information Center, in an interview with Ukrainian Radio.

Why do I need to renew my driver's license issued before 2013?

Driver's licenses issued 10-20 years ago have a number of restrictions on the use of modern online services due to the fact that the register has been operating only since 2013. The main reasons for the need to update:

– Lack of a digital photo in the database

– Inability to fully use electronic services

– Technical limitations of the registration system

According to Mr. Batsits, citizens often ask why they cannot order a particular service online. And the problem is that the register does not have complete data on drivers who received their license before 2013, and therefore such citizens cannot receive services online.

It is also important to note that the licenses issued before 2008 do not comply with international standards, and therefore the Ministry of Internal Affairs recommends that citizens exchange them for more modern ones, which are recognized in almost all countries of the world.

Please note! Driving licenses issued before March 29, 2011, have no specified expiration date, and new licenses are valid only for 30 years. The exception is the license issued for the first time - its validity period is 2 years.

How do I exchange my driver's license for a new one?

There are several ways to exchange a driver's license:

– Through the “Diia” app

– At the service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs

– In some cases, online through the driver's electronic cabinet.

There may be problems with the online exchange through the cabinet and Diia, because, according to Batsits, if the license was issued a long time ago, the database does not contain the photo required to exchange the license. In such cases, you will have to contact the service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs directly.
