Every year, tourist destinations become more and more popular, but this does not always benefit the places themselves. The Fodor's travel portal has published its version of the No List 2025, a list of places that travellers should avoid next year.

This list does not call for a boycott, but rather aims to draw attention to the problems caused by the influx of tourists. It's a reason to think about how our presence affects the world around us and how we can travel more consciously.

The list of places is divided into two main categories:

- Destinations with perennial problems of over-tourism.

- Destinations where the negative impact of tourism is just beginning to emerge.

Destinations burdened by years of tourism

These cities and regions have been suffering from tourist overload for years. No improvement in the situation has been observed so far.

🔻Bali, Indonesia - The island of dreams is facing overcrowded beaches, increasing litter and a lack of water for locals.

🔻Barcelona, Spain - The historic centre is suffering from an influx of tourists, making life unbearable for locals.

🔻Majorca, Spain - The popular resort is struggling with overdevelopment and environmental problems.

🔻Canary Islands, Spain - Unique nature is under threat from mass tourism.

🔻Venice, Italy - The legendary city of bridges is suffering from an influx of cruise ships and overcrowding, which threatens its architecture and ecosystem.

🔻Lisbon, Portugal - Growing popularity leads to a shortage of housing for locals and the destruction of urban infrastructure.

🔻Koh Samui, Thailand - Tourism is degrading the island's ecosystem, including coral reefs.

🔻Mount Everest, Nepal - The base camp is literally buried in garbage from climbers.

Places where the negative impact is just beginning to be felt

These destinations are at an early stage of over-tourism, but their problems are growing rapidly.

🔻Agrigento, Sicily, Italy - Historic monuments are at risk of damage due to the influx of tourists.

🔻British Virgin Islands - Coral reef ecosystems are beginning to suffer from intensive tourism.

🔻Kerala, India - The popularity of the region is leading to water pollution and a deterioration in the quality of life of the locals.

🔻Kyoto, Japan - Excessive attention to cultural monuments threatens their preservation.

🔻Tokyo, Japan - The growth of tourism creates problems with infrastructure in the metropolis.

Oaxaca, Mexico - The influx of tourists threatens the traditional culture of the region.

🔻North Coast 500 route, Scotland - Increasing number of cars is damaging the natural environment.

Problems caused by tourism

Experts note that all these places have similar problems:

- Increased amount of rubbish.

- Lack of housing for local residents due to the reorientation of real estate for rent for tourists.

- Damage to cultural and historical monuments.

- Pressure on local ecosystems.

Therefore, travellers are encouraged to make informed choices when planning their trips. Instead of visiting popular destinations, you can pay attention to lesser-known places that are not yet under excessive pressure.

Not travelling to the places listed above in 2025 is not just about caring for the planet. It's a chance for these unique parts of the world to recover, rebuild their ecosystems and infrastructure to welcome tourists again in the future.

Don't forget that travel insurance remains an integral part of any trip abroad. To feel completely safe during your trip, we recommend taking out travel insurance right now.

We remind you! The implementation of the EES digital border control system is being accelerated in the European Union. The new IT system automates the registration of entry and exit of third-country nationals, improves security and simplifies border crossing.
