How to certify the correctness of a document translation: clarification of the Ministry of Justice
It is very important to properly certify the accuracy of a document translation in Ukraine or abroad. In this article, we analyze the rules and procedures, including who is authorized to certify, what documents are required, and other important details
During the war, Ukrainian citizens often face the need to translate official documents. However, in order to use such documents in legal or official matters, it is important to certify the correctness of the translation, which confirms that the text of the translated document corresponds to the original.
The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has provided clarification on how this procedure can be carried out.
Who can certify a translation?
Certifying the accuracy of a document translation is a notarial act that can be performed by both public and private notaries.
Main provisions:
- A notary can certify the translation of a document from one language into another if he or she is proficient in the respective languages.
- If the notary does not know one of the languages, the translation must be performed by a translator. In this case, the notary certifies the authenticity of the translator's signature. To do this, the translator must provide a document confirming his or her identity and qualifications.
How is the certification performed?
The certification of the correctness of a translation can be a separate notarial act or be performed during another notarial act, for example, certification of the accuracy of a copy of a document or certification of a contract.
Features of the procedure:
1. Translation within one page:
- The original text is placed on the left side, the translation - on the right.
- The translation must include the entire text of the document.
- The translator's signature is placed under both texts.
- The notary's certification inscription is added at the bottom.
2. Translation on a separate sheet of paper:
The translation is attached to the original or its copy, laced, signed by the notary and sealed.
3. Registration of notarial acts:
If the notarization of a translation is accompanied by another notarial act, each of them is registered separately and receives its own registration number.
