Kyiv's Kontraktova Square to be reconstructed into a dynamic space: what it might look like

Urbanists have created a project that they believe will revitalise one of the most popular squares in the Ukrainian capital. Find out how they plan to reconstruct the square and what they want to change
Kontraktova Square, one of the most famous historical locations in Kyiv, may soon be transformed into a modern and functional public space. Famous Danish urbanist Mikael Colville-Andersen, together with DIY Ukraine, presented a project called TORV Kyiv (torv means ‘public square’ in Danish). Their goal is to create a bright, dynamic place that will be attractive to all age groups and promote active urban interaction.
Why do they want to renovate it?
According to the creators of the project, despite the removal of cars from Kontraktova Square, it still remains a ‘soulless’ space. The asphalt makes it too hot in summer, and the lack of greenery and well-thought-out infrastructure makes the square deserted in winter. The huge Ferris wheel looks clumsy and does not fit into the overall urban landscape. Urbanists propose to solve these problems using modern principles of tactical urbanism.
What will change on the square?
The TORV Kyiv project proposes to turn the square into a flourishing urban oasis. The key changes include:
1. greening of the space: installation of planters with trees that will create shade on hot days and become part of the trauma-sensitive design, which is especially important for veterans.
2. Seating: fixed and mobile seating with phone chargers and power banks.
3) Environmental solutions: installation of bio-piles and rain gardens to collect and filter rainwater.
The project takes into account the needs of people of different ages and interests. Here is what may appear on the renovated square:
- Areas for physical activity: skateboarding areas, innovative sports structures.
- Entertainment for children: a playground with traffic, where they can learn to ride a bicycle.
- Leisure areas: chess tables and large chess boards with unique pieces.
- Cultural events: art exhibitions in waterproof frames, open-air film screenings.
- Seasonal activities: free ice rink in winter.
According to urbanists, the reconstruction of Kontraktova Square is aimed at:
- Increasing the number of visitors who can comfortably spend time here.
- Attracting children to physical activity and education.
- Increase the profitability of local businesses.
- Inspiring other Ukrainian cities to implement similar projects.
To involve the city's residents in the reconstruction process, urbanists plan to conduct surveys, public discussions, and use interactive stands on the square.

The project is designed for two years, but if necessary, the space can be quickly returned to its original state.
We remind you! Ukraine is preparing to launch Direct to Cell satellite communications. This is expected to significantly increase the resilience of the national communications infrastructure.
