Experts analysed education at 32,000 universities worldwide. The key criterion for selecting institutions was the level of representation in the web space, which reflects the openness and accessibility of scientific and educational resources
The new Webometrics ranking, compiled by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), covers more than 32,000 universities from around the world. In 2025, the analysis for the first time included RoR-identifiers (Research Organisation Registry), which allow us to clarify the affiliation of the university and its departments to the global scientific community. The key criterion for selecting institutions was the level of representation in the web space, which reflects the openness and accessibility of scientific and educational resources.
The results of the January issue of the Webometrics 2025 ranking were published on the Figshare platform, which supports the principles of open science and ensures transparency in the dissemination of research data.

Methodology and data sources
When compiling the Webometrics ranking, we analysed:
🔻 Visibility (50%) - the number of unique external sources containing links to the university website. Data was collected using Majestic and other reputable web platforms.
🔻 Openness (10%) - citations of employees' profiles in Google Scholar (the results of the Transparent ranking were taken into account: Top Universities by Google Scholar Citations).
🔻 Quality (40%) - the volume of publications published in leading international journals indexed by the Scopus database for 2019-2023.
Internet data was collected in the first days of January, and bibliometric indicators covered a five-year period.
Due to the complexity of these criteria, Webometrics reflects the openness of universities in providing access to knowledge, scientific influence and competitiveness in the global academic space.

The significance of a high place in the ranking
Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv consistently holds a leading position among Ukrainian universities in global rankings. Its move to 1542nd place among more than 32 thousand universities in the world shows that:
1. High-quality research: university departments and research centres actively publish their results in international journals indexed by leading scientific databases.
2. Developed international cooperation: the university strengthens partnerships with foreign institutions by participating in academic exchange programmes, conferences and joint research projects.
3. Commitment to the principles of open science: KNU is increasingly promoting digital repositories, supporting open access to research and encouraging the scientific activity of its students and faculty.
4. Steady growth of reputation: high scores in Webometrics increase recognition and credibility.
We remind you! The educational results of Ukrainian children abroad will be officially recognised. The Verkhovna Rada has passed a draft law that will simplify the procedure for crediting the acquired knowledge and facilitate the return of children to the national education system. We talked about the innovations and their significance for the future of Ukrainian schoolchildren.
