Used car market in 2026: key trends and forecasts

The used car market in 2026 remains influenced by several important factors: a shortage of almost new cars, consistently high prices, and changes in European environmental regulation. Buyers increasingly have to take into account not only the cost but also the compliance of the car with new EU requirements. Learn more about how the secondary car market will change in 2026 and what to look for when buying a car

After several turbulent years, the used car market is gradually entering a phase of relative stability, but this does not mean a sharp decline in prices. The effects of the pandemic, chip shortages, and the decline in new car production continue to be felt in the secondary market. At the same time, in 2026, the impact of electrification and environmental restrictions in the EU will increase. All this creates new rules of the game for buyers, including Ukrainians who are considering cars from Europe.

In our previous article, we provided clarification from the Ministry of Internal Affairs on how to re-register a car purchased at an auction in Ukraine.

General situation on the used car market in 2026

In 2026, the used car market will remain challenging and uneven, despite the gradual stabilization of economic processes in Europe. Buyers are no longer seeing the sharp price spikes that characterized previous years, but they should not expect a significant reduction in prices either. The secondary market continues to feel the effects of the events of 2020-2023, when the pandemic, factory shutdowns, and chip shortages limited the production of new cars.

One of the key features of 2026 is the shortage of cars aged three to six years. This category has traditionally been in the highest demand, as it combines relatively modern technology with an affordable price. Due to the limited supply, such cars are slowly losing value, which keeps the overall price level in the used car market stable.

Buyer behavior also has an additional impact. Many drivers postpone purchasing new cars due to high costs or uncertainty about future environmental requirements. As a result, the demand for used cars remains consistently high, especially for models with moderate mileage and a clear operating history.

Why do used car prices remain high?

One of the main reasons for the consistently high prices in the secondary market in 2026 is the shortage of almost new cars. Due to the decline in production in previous years, there are significantly fewer cars on the market that are several years old, which usually form the basis of supply in the used car segment. These are the models most often sought after by buyers who are not ready to invest in a new car but want modern features and relatively low wear and tear.

As a result, cars that are three to six years old depreciate much more slowly than before. Even with inflation and lending rates stabilizing in the EU, sellers are in no hurry to cut prices, as demand continues to outstrip supply. This is particularly noticeable in popular segments: compact crossovers, city cars, and diesel models, which are still actively used for long-distance travel.

Another factor is consumer caution when it comes to buying new cars. Some drivers postpone vehicle upgrades because they are waiting for new environmental standards and regulatory changes. In such a situation, a used car is perceived as a more predictable and flexible solution, which further supports the high level of prices in the secondary market.

Earlier, we reported that Ukrainians set a record for electric car purchases in 2025.

Used electric cars in 2026: more choice and new risks

In 2026, the segment of used electric vehicles will become one of the fastest growing in the secondary market. The number of such cars is growing every year, as more and more electric vehicles reach the end of their leasing contracts and go on sale. This gradually creates a wider choice for buyers and creates the preconditions for lower prices compared to previous years.

Increased supply makes used electric vehicles more affordable, but it also changes the approach to choice. Buyers are increasingly paying attention not only to the price, but also to the condition of the battery, the real range, and the cost of further maintenance. For many, these factors are becoming crucial, as the battery determines the residual value of an electric vehicle on the secondary market.

The emergence of a large number of Chinese-made electric vehicles plays a separate role. Such models usually lose value faster than cars from well-known European brands, which creates both opportunities and risks for buyers. On the one hand, this is a chance to buy an electric car at a lower cost, while on the other hand, the issues of brand trust and liquidity of such a car in the event of a subsequent resale remain open.

New EU environmental requirements in 2026 and their impact on the secondary market

In 2026, environmental regulations in the European Union will be significantly tightened, which will directly affect the used car market. Low-emission zones are being expanded in many cities, where diesel cars that do not meet the Euro 5 standard and gasoline cars below the Euro 2 standard will be banned from entering. Violation of these rules will result in fines, so compliance with environmental standards is becoming one of the key criteria when choosing a car.

Especially active steps in this direction are being taken by Spain, where, starting in 2026, all cities with a population of more than 50 thousand people are obliged to expand restricted areas for old cars. This practice is gradually spreading to other EU countries, which reduces the attractiveness of cars with outdated environmental standards in the secondary market.

At the same time, the EU is moving to a new Euro 7 standard. Starting from the end of 2026, new cars will be certified according to stricter requirements, and later these rules will apply to all new registrations. For buyers of used cars, this means that they need to assess in advance whether the chosen car will remain roadworthy in the coming years, especially when it comes to traveling or living in the EU.
