Ireland has extended temporary protection for Ukrainians: for how long?
Many Ukrainians in Ireland have been waiting for clarity regarding their future status — and the authorities have finally made a decision. Temporary protection will continue to apply, but along with the extension come new nuances and questions about further legalisation. Find out how long the status is valid for and what is important to do now
Ireland has officially extended temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens. The new term is set until 4 March 2027, in line with the European Union's decision. This means that Ukrainians will be able to continue to live legally in the country, work and use public services without having to reapply.
The extension applies automatically. Holders of a temporary protection certificate (yellow document) and IRP card do not need to reapply — their status is considered valid until the new date.
What the extension actually means
For most Ukrainians, it means stability above all else. Temporary protection in Ireland allows you to:
— reside in the country legally
— work without a separate permit
— receive medical care
— use the education system
— receive social support
However, it is important to understand that the extension does not mean a transition to permanent residence. It is still a temporary mechanism.
Why the status does not turn into permanent residence
The temporary protection system was created as an emergency response by the EU to the war, not as an immigration programme. It does not count towards migration experience and does not automatically lead to residency or citizenship.
That is why the Irish authorities are already reminding people that once the regime ends, they will either have to change their basis for staying or leave the country. In fact, the period until 2027 is a time for planning your future status.

What Stamp 4 means for Ukrainians
Ukrainians in Ireland receive an IRP card with a Stamp 4 mark. It gives them the right to work without a work permit, but differs from the classic Stamp 4.
The usual Stamp 4 is issued after several years of legal residence — and it counts towards future immigration. Temporary Stamp 4:
▪️ does not create grounds for permanent residence
▪️ does not guarantee the counting of years of residence
▪️ is valid only within the framework of temporary protection
In other words, legally, it is not a full immigration status, but a temporary right of residence.
At the same time, stricter conditions are being prepared
Despite the continuation of protection, Ireland is considering changes to the support system. The authorities explain this by the increase in the number of arrivals and the lack of resources.
Among the measures under discussion are:
▪️ reduction of the period of free accommodation in public housing from 90 to 30 days
▪️ refusing accommodation to people who already have protection in another EU country
▪️ the possible gradual closure of the compensation programme for landlords
According to the government, dozens of Ukrainians arrive in the country every day, and without changes, the system may no longer be able to cope.
