Ramadan 2026: what tourists need to know when visiting Muslim countries during the religious holiday

Are you planning a trip to the East in late winter or early spring? A trip to Muslim countries from 18 February to 19 March 2026 is a chance to see the East not in a ‘tourist wrapper’ but in its true, spiritual form. However, for Ukrainian travellers accustomed to the European pace of life, this period requires a certain flexibility and understanding of local traditions.

The rhythm of life in Muslim cities

The main change you will encounter is a complete transformation of your usual routine. During the day, life in cities slows down: believers observe strict fasting, so many cafes and restaurants close their doors until sunset or operate ‘for takeaway’ behind thick screens. Museums and government institutions shorten the working day, trying to let employees go home earlier.

The real magic begins in the evening. At the moment of Iftar (the first meal after sunset), the streets empty for a short time — it is better to wait out this hour in your hotel, as it is almost impossible to catch a taxi or avoid traffic jams. But an hour later, the cities light up, night markets open, and restaurants begin to offer festive sets with dates, traditional grilled meat and oriental sweets.

Etiquette and respect

Although service in popular hotels in Egypt, the UAE or Turkey remains at the same level, it is important to be tactful outside resort areas. Eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours in front of those who are fasting may be perceived as disrespectful.

Particular attention should be paid to appearance. During Ramadan 2026, social norms become stricter: when going out in the city, it is recommended to choose clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. Bright swimsuits and beachwear are only appropriate by the pool. It is also worth remembering that this is a time of silence and prayer, so loud music or overly emotional behaviour in public places may cause disapproval.

Ramadan — a wonderful experience for tourists

Ramadan offers a unique opportunity to experience Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal. From midnight to 4 a.m., cities are filled with an incredible festive atmosphere, with markets and cafes open. This is the best time for shopping and walking without the exhausting heat.

Remember that Ramadan is not about restrictions, but about hospitality. If a local invites you to share Iftar with them, don't refuse — this is the highest degree of trust and the best way to get to know the culture of the country from the inside.
