On February 27–28, large-scale warning strikes by public transport workers will take place in Germany. The action could significantly affect travel within cities and between regions of the country, according to Spiegel.

The strikes are expected to cover almost all federal states, leading to serious disruptions in local public transport.

Reason for the strike: wage negotiations

The nationwide warning strikes were announced by the German public transport union Ver.di. The action is taking place against the backdrop of ongoing wage negotiations.

The union has announced a strike for Friday, February 27, and in some regions also for Saturday, February 28. The format of a “warning strike” means a temporary work stoppage to strengthen the position in negotiations.

What transport will not be running on February 27-28

The strike will cover almost all of Germany. It is highly likely that city buses, trams, subways, and regional trains operated by municipal operators will disappear from the routes on these two days.

In fact, local public transport in most cities may come to a near standstill.

The strike will begin on the morning of February 27 and last until the end of Saturday, February 28, and in some regions even until Sunday.

Which transport will continue to operate despite the strike

At the same time, the strike will not affect transport operated by Deutsche Bahn. This means that DB intercity trains and some of the S-Bahn suburban trains operated by Deutsche Bahn will continue to run.

For this reason, there may be increased traffic on rail routes during the strike, especially in large cities.

Which state will not be affected by the strike

Lower Saxony will be the only federal state not affected by the strike. An agreement has already been reached there to refrain from strikes until the end of March.

In other regions of the country, disruptions will be unavoidable.

How to prepare for travel during the strike

Passengers planning to travel in Germany on February 27-28 are advised to:

● check the transport schedule in their federal state;

● look for alternative routes in advance;

● consider traveling by Deutsche Bahn trains;

● take into account possible overloads and delays.
