A map of mountain shelters has been created in Transcarpathia: where can tourists wait out bad weather or spend the night?
An interactive map of shelters for tourists in the Carpathians has been created in Transcarpathia. Find out how it works, where to find mountain huts for overnight stays, and how “rescue points” help travelers in the mountains
A new safety tool for travelers has appeared in the Carpathians ahead of the summer tourist season. An interactive map of mountain shelters has been created in Zakarpattia, where tourists can take refuge from bad weather or spend the night during hikes.
Information about the new map was published by the Department of Tourism and Resorts of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration on Facebook.
Map of shelters in the Carpathians: what is it and how does it work?
The summer tourist season in the Ukrainian Carpathians traditionally attracts thousands of travelers. Some of them choose easy one-day routes suitable for the whole family, while others plan complex multi-day hikes with overnight stays in the mountains.
It is for such cases that an interactive map of shelters was created. It helps tourists find places where they can wait out bad weather or spend the night while hiking in the mountains.
The map was created by Taras Rykmas, head of the Terra Incognitas tourist club. It shows dozens of small houses in different areas of the Zakarpattia region. These shelters can be an important safety point for travelers who find themselves far from populated areas or in difficult weather conditions.
According to experts from the State Emergency Service, tourists should use this map in case of unforeseen situations. In some cases, rescuers themselves use it during search operations.

Why do tourists need a map of mountain shelters?
Mountain routes in the Carpathians often pass through remote areas where the weather can change very quickly. Even experienced tourists sometimes encounter situations where they need to find shelter or a place to spend the night urgently.
It is for such cases that the map of shelters can be an important guide. It allows you to plan your route in advance and know where the nearest safe places are located.
Experts also remind us that even if a hike seems easy, tourists should carefully prepare for the trip and consider the possible risks. Having a map of shelters can significantly increase the level of safety during the trip.
“Rescue points” on tourist routes
In addition to the map of shelters, special “rescue points” have also been installed on tourist routes in Transcarpathia. These are yellow information signs that help tourists determine their exact location. In case of danger, travelers can pass these coordinates on to mountain rescuers.
Such markers greatly simplify the work of rescue services, as they allow them to find people who need help in the mountains more quickly.
How to prepare for a trip to the Carpathians?
Before heading to the mountains, tourists are advised to:
● check the route and weather conditions;
● have a map or GPS navigation with you;
● inform your family about the route;
● take the necessary equipment and a supply of water.
A map of shelters can be an additional safety tool when planning a trip.
