The Czech Republic is changing its rules for foreign residents: digitization, increased oversight, and new requirements
The Czech Republic is preparing new rules for foreign residents, including the digitization of procedures and stricter oversight. Find out what changes are planned, when they will take effect, and what this means for Ukrainians
The Czech Republic is preparing for a major overhaul of its rules governing the stay of foreign nationals. The government has already approved a bill that reforms the document processing system and tightens control over migration processes.
According to the website mv.gov.cz, the changes do not alter the basic conditions for obtaining a residence permit and do not apply to asylum or temporary protection. At the same time, they significantly change the very procedure for foreigners’ interaction with government agencies.
The main change — digitization of all procedures
One of the key changes is the transition to an online application system. Foreigners will be able to:
● submit residence documents remotely;
● communicate with government agencies online;
● receive decisions faster thanks to process automation.
This means a gradual move away from paper applications and queues, which have remained one of the main problems of the migration system.
Greater responsibility for employers and organizations
The new law also provides for increased responsibility for those who invite foreigners to the Czech Republic. This includes employers, universities, and sports organizations. These parties will now bear greater responsibility for ensuring that invited individuals comply with residency rules.

Quotas for foreign entry may change
The law also opens the possibility of expanding entry quotas for foreigners depending on their country of origin and purpose of stay. This means that the Czech Republic will be able to respond more flexibly to the needs of the labor market and the education sector.
Faster revocation of residence permits
Another important change is the acceleration of the procedure for revoking residence permits. This will apply to foreigners who violate the law or pose a threat to public order. In this way, the state is strengthening control over compliance with residency rules.
Mandatory registration for EU citizens
The new rules introduce mandatory registration for EU citizens staying in the Czech Republic for more than 90 days. Previously, this procedure was voluntary, but it will now become mandatory, allowing the state to better track migration flows even within the European Union.
When will the new rules take effect?
The law still needs to go through all stages of adoption—it must be approved by parliament and signed by the president. The new rules are expected to take effect alongside the launch of a digital system in the coming years.
In effect, the Czech Republic is moving toward a more modern and controlled migration model. At the same time, this means greater responsibility for foreigners themselves: any violations could more quickly lead to the loss of a residence permit.
Under these conditions, it is important to understand the rules in advance and prepare documents correctly. For example, Ukrainians planning to move or already residing in the Czech Republic can contact Visit Ukraine’s immigration lawyers — they help select the optimal type of permit, prepare documents, and avoid the risks of refusal or revocation of status.
We remind you! The Czech Republic is tightening the conditions for Ukrainians to obtain long-term residence and is emphasizing economic self-sufficiency. Read about the new requirements set by the government and who will be eligible for special status.
