Three Safe Countries That Tourists Mistakenly Consider Dangerous in 2026

Some countries around the world have a reputation for being dangerous, even though the situation there has actually changed long ago. Find out which popular destinations tourists underestimate and why they may be safe for travel

There are many destinations around the world that tourists tend to avoid due to outdated perceptions of danger. At the same time, the actual situation in these countries has long since changed—and today they can be just as safe as popular European resorts. This is reported by the travel portal Travel Off Path.

Why are tourists mistaken about the safety of these countries?

Generally, perceptions of danger are formed over years—through news reports of wars, conflicts, or criminal incidents. Even after the situation stabilizes, these associations remain. That is why some countries still have a reputation for being dangerous, even though they actually meet the safety standards of developed tourist destinations.

El Salvador: From Crime Capital to Safe Resort

Back in the 1990s and 2000s, El Salvador was considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world. However, since 2019, the situation has changed dramatically. President Nayib Bukele declared a state of emergency and launched a massive crackdown on crime. As a result, over 100,000 members of criminal gangs were arrested, and the homicide rate dropped by 98%. Today, the country has a Level 1 safety rating according to the U.S. State Department—the same as Switzerland or Japan.

According to traveler Tyler Fox, El Salvador has not only become safer but is also actively attracting tourists thanks to its natural beauty. He particularly highlights the Mizati coast with its ocean views and resorts.

Vietnam: a country that has long lived without war

For many, Vietnam is still associated with the war of the 1970s. However, the modern reality is quite different. The country has lived in peace for decades, has a stable internal situation, and has been awarded a Level 1 safety rating.

Vietnam also stands out for its young population, active participation in the global economy, and openness to tourists.

Rwanda: One of Africa’s Safest Countries

Rwanda is often associated with the 1994 genocide, yet today it is one of the safest and cleanest countries on the continent. The capital, Kigali, is known for its cleanliness, maintains a high level of order, and is often compared to Singapore.

The country has been assigned a Level 2 travel advisory by the U.S., though this is primarily due to the situation along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rwanda’s interior regions remain stable and well-controlled.

Despite these positive changes, travelers should remember: even in safe countries, it is important to follow basic safety rules and plan your trip in advance.

Medical insurance is also a crucial part of your preparation. For example, purchasing a policy through Visit Ukraine allows you to cover medical expenses abroad and avoid unexpected costs in case of force majeure.

We remind you! Recent geopolitical upheavals have permanently changed the rules of investing and choosing a place to live. Read about which safe countries in the world remain reliable “concrete safes” for preserving capital and where it is best to wait out global turbulence.
