The system for settling traffic accidents in Ukraine under the MTPL policy has changed significantly. As reported by the MTIBU, the key updates were introduced as early as 2025, but it was in 2026 that the new model became fully operational.

Today, settling traffic accidents has become simpler, faster, and more straightforward for drivers. This is particularly noticeable in standard cases—when two vehicles are involved in an accident without serious complications.

Electronic Europrotocol: Handling Traffic Accidents Without the Police

One of the key changes has been the active use of the Europrotocol. By the end of 2025, drivers had handled 46% of traffic accidents on their own—without calling the police. This tool significantly simplifies the procedure:

● no need to call the police;

● no driver’s license is confiscated;

● the case is not referred to court;

● no fine is imposed for traffic violations.

You can file a Europrotocol in two ways: on a paper form or online via the “Electronic Europrotocol” service.

The electronic format is gaining popularity. It guides you through the steps while filling out the form, automatically verifies the data, and reduces the risk of errors. Once completed, the document is immediately sent to insurance companies—without the need for a personal visit.

Additionally, starting in 2025, the payment limit under the Europrotocol has been abolished (previously — 80,000 UAH). Now, compensation is paid within the limits of the insurance coverage — up to 250,000 UAH, just as in standard claims settlement.

Direct Settlement: Claims with Your Own Insurer

Another important change is the introduction of a mandatory direct settlement mechanism. Now, after a traffic accident, the driver contacts their own insurance company rather than the at-fault party’s insurer. The driver’s insurance company organizes the settlement process and makes the payment. The Motor Transport Insurance Bureau of Ukraine (MTIBU) has also joined this system, allowing compensation to be received even in cases where the at-fault party does not have a valid policy.

According to 2025 data, the average settlement time under the direct mechanism was half that of the standard procedure. Additionally, the maximum timeframe for the insurer to make a decision has been reduced from 90 to 60 days.

Repairs at a Service Center: A New Approach to Compensation

The modern auto liability insurance model has changed the very principle of compensation: instead of a “paper assessment,” the focus is on the actual restoration of the vehicle. Now the insurance company:

● offers at least three service centers for repairs;

● arranges repairs at an authorized service center (if the car is under warranty);

● may approve repairs at a service center chosen by the driver.

Payment for the work is made directly to the repair shop, without the customer’s involvement.

It is also important that the vehicle depreciation factor and deductible have been eliminated. This means that repairs are fully covered, with no additional costs to the driver. A cash payout remains an option, but in that case, the amount is reduced by 20% (VAT).

The updated system for settling traffic accidents effectively transforms auto liability insurance from a formal obligation into a practical tool for protection. Drivers benefit from faster accident processing, less bureaucracy, the ability to work with their own insurance company, and full vehicle restoration without additional costs.

At the same time, all these benefits are available only if you have a valid MTPL policy. That is why it is important to purchase auto liability insurance in advance and choose a reliable insurer. You can do this online—for example, through Visit Ukraine, where you can compare offers from different insurers and easily select the best terms.

We remind you! Choosing car insurance affects the driver’s financial security in the event of an accident or other risks. Read how to choose a policy without hidden terms, what to look for, and how to avoid problems with payouts.
