Good Friday is the most profound, quiet, and sorrowful day of Lent, preceding the joyful feast of Easter. It is a time when Christians around the world pause in prayer, reflecting on the final hours of Jesus Christ’s earthly life, his suffering, and his crucifixion.

What date is Good Friday in 2026, and what is its significance?

The dates of Holy Week change every year depending on the date of Easter. In 2026, this most solemn day falls on April 10. It was on this day that the Son of God was unjustly condemned and walked His difficult path to Golgotha for the salvation of humanity.

The essence of this day lies not only in mourning, but also in remembering the Savior’s boundless love, sacrifice, and all-encompassing forgiveness. Special services are held in all churches, during which the Shroud—a symbolic representation of Christ’s body in the coffin—is brought out. Believers come to it to bow, pray, and reflect on their own lives. This is a day of deep inner purification and preparation of the soul for the joy of the Bright Resurrection.

What should not be done on Good Friday?

Spiritual work requires concentration, so church tradition includes a number of strict prohibitions designed to prevent people from being distracted from thoughts of God. On this day, any form of entertainment, celebration, dancing, loud music, or revelry is entirely inappropriate.

Believers are also strongly advised not to get into conflicts, argue, use foul language, get irritated, or hold a grudge against loved ones. Good Friday should be spent in the utmost peace and spiritual tranquility so that negative emotions do not disrupt the atmosphere of silence and repentance.

Is it permissible to clean on Good Friday?

One of the most common questions in the run-up to Easter concerns household chores. Traditionally, on this day of mourning, one should not engage in physical labor, work the land, do a thorough cleaning, sew, or do laundry.

The Church advises completing all household chores in advance, on Maundy Thursday. Good Friday is a time for prayer, not for worldly busyness. If work cannot be avoided due to one’s schedule, clergy advise performing one’s duties conscientiously while maintaining inner prayer and peace.

What can you eat: how to observe strict fasting?

Good Friday is considered the day of the strictest abstinence during the entire period of Great Lent. Many believers, of their own volition, completely abstain from all food until the afternoon—the moment the Shroud is brought out in the church. After that, only bread and pure water are permitted.

Of course, any meat-based food (meat, eggs, dairy products) is strictly forbidden. However, the Church always reminds us that the degree of physical abstinence should be determined individually by each person, based on their state of health, so that fasting brings spiritual benefit rather than harm to the body.

How to properly observe this day: what should you do?

The main purpose of Good Friday is sincere repentance, spiritual purification, and compassion. It is best to devote your free time to visiting the church, participating in services, and reading the Gospel. If you cannot go to church, it is worth finding a quiet place at home to pray.

This is the perfect time to ask for forgiveness for any wrongs you’ve committed, to forgive those who have wronged you, to help those in need, and to show mercy. Spend this day in complete silence and deep reflection so that you may welcome the coming feast of Easter with a pure heart.

Reminder! The days leading up to Easter hold deep biblical significance and require strict spiritual discipline. This is a time of sincere repentance, when it is important not only to finish daily chores but also to observe important church prohibitions.
