Easter brings not only great joy into our homes, but also important folk traditions—breaking which can lead to misfortune. Many people make mistakes out of ignorance: they visit the cemetery or dispose of leftover blessed food improperly, thereby losing their prosperity. Learn about the 5 main rules of Easter
Today, April 12, 2026, millions of believers are celebrating the Resurrection of Christ. This is a time of great spiritual joy, marking the end of Great Lent and family feasts. However, along with the holiday, every home is faced with questions about how to properly observe this day without breaking time-honored traditions. Unspoken rules are passed down from generation to generation, helping to preserve peace in the family and attract prosperity. Below are five main Easter rules based on the most common questions people ask search engines on this day.
What to eat first at the Easter feast
The meal on Bright Sunday is not just breakfast, but an important ritual of breaking the fast after a long period of fasting. It is strongly discouraged to start the festive meal with heavy meat dishes or alcohol.
According to strict tradition, every family member must first eat a piece of a blessed egg. In many families, it is customary to share a single egg among everyone at the table, symbolizing unity and the strong bond between generations. Only after this can you taste a piece of Easter cake, and only then move on to homemade sausage, smoked pork, and other delicacies.
Is it permissible to clean, wash, or work on Easter
The Church and folk traditions are in complete agreement here: any heavy physical labor on this day is strictly forbidden. The holiday is meant for prayer, rest, and the joy of spending time with loved ones. Laundry, ironing, mopping the floor, and even a thorough cleaning of the kitchen after the feast should be postponed.
It is believed that a person who picks up a broom on Easter Day risks “sweeping” good luck and prosperity out of the house for the entire coming year. An exception is made only for those who are on duty and cannot cancel their professional obligations.
What to do with the shells from blessed eggs and crumbs from the Easter cake
This is one of the most common causes for concern after the blessing of baskets in the church. Throwing the remains of blessed food into a regular trash can along with household waste is considered a grave sin. In ancient times, it was believed that such disrespect for the sacred could bring illness upon the home.
All eggshells, crumbs from Easter cakes, and uneaten pieces of festive bread should be carefully collected. The best way to dispose of them is to burn them (in an oven or over a bonfire), bury them in the ground in a secluded spot where neither people nor dogs go, or simply feed them to the birds.

Is it permissible to visit a cemetery on Easter Sunday
Although many people, out of habit, visit the graves of deceased relatives on Easter Sunday, clergy insist that this is a grave mistake. Easter is a celebration of life over death. It is not customary to mourn, weep, or tend to graves on this joyful day.
The souls of the deceased are also “celebrating,” and they should not be disturbed. A special day is set aside for visiting cemeteries and commemorating loved ones—Radonitsa, which is traditionally observed on the ninth day after Easter.
What You Absolutely Must Not Do on Easter and Why
The main prohibitions of this day concern not only daily life but also a person’s inner state. It is strictly forbidden to swear, use profanity, bring up old grievances, or provoke conflicts. According to tradition, any quarrel that begins on Easter will drag on for the entire year and bring many tears.
It is also forbidden to be greedy on this day. If someone asks you for help or alms, it is not customary to refuse. By sharing food or a coin with those in need, you, according to ancient traditions, open the door to financial prosperity in your own home.
Reminder! The days leading up to Easter hold deep biblical significance and require strict spiritual discipline. This is a time of sincere repentance, when it is important not only to finish daily chores but also to observe important church prohibitions.
