On April 18, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Historical and Cultural Monuments – a date that reminds us of the immense heritage we have inherited from previous generations. The holiday was established by presidential decree in 1999 and coincides with the International Day for Monuments and Sites, initiated by UNESCO.

Ukraine has thousands of cultural heritage sites – from world-famous shrines to little-known, but no less valuable monuments scattered throughout the country. And while everyone knows about St. Sophia of Kyiv or Lviv, real discoveries await where there are no crowds of tourists – in the rocks, ruins and landscapes that preserve the memory of centuries.

That is why, in honor of the holiday, we have compiled a selection of monuments that will surprise even those who have already traveled extensively in Ukraine.

Chervonohorod Castle – ruins among the hills

Photo – visitukraine.today

Today, only picturesque towers remain from Chervonohorod Castle, but this is what creates its unique atmosphere. The ruins are located in the canyon-like valley of the Dzhuryn River, which gives the place an almost unreal appearance.

Once upon a time, there was a powerful fortress here, which was repeatedly rebuilt, changing its appearance along with the eras. Today, it is one of the most photogenic locations in Ukraine – and at the same time one of the least promoted. The proximity of the Dzhuryn Waterfall – the highest flat waterfall in Ukraine – adds a special charm.

How to visit? The location is often included in one-day routes to Podillia – in particular, tours that combine Chervonohorod Castle, Dzhuryn Waterfall and Crystal Caves.

The Oak of Maksym Zaliznyak - a thousand-year-old witness to history

In the heart of Kholodny Yar grows the Oak of Maksym Zaliznyak - one of the oldest oaks in Ukraine, whose age is estimated at over a thousand years. It was named after one of the leaders of the Koliiv region, and over time the tree became a symbol of strength, endurance and struggle.

The massive trunk and spreading branches create the feeling that you are not just looking at a natural object, but a living witness to history. It has survived the change of empires, wars and generations - and still stands as a reminder of the depth of the Ukrainian past.

How to visit? The oak is part of the routes to Kholodny Yar and is usually included in complex trips together with Chyhyryn, Subotov and other historical locations in the region.

Starokyivska Gora - the birthplace of the city

Starokyivska Gora is considered the place from which the history of Kyiv began. It was here, according to legend, that the founders of the city settled, and later the first fortified center of ancient Kyiv was formed.

This is not just a historical location, but a kind of “reference point” – a space where pagan shrines, ancient burial grounds and traces of the first city fortifications are combined. Today, a special atmosphere reigns here: despite its location in the very center of the capital, the place retains a sense of silence and depth of time.

How to visit? Starokyivska Gora is best discovered in the format of walking routes through the historical center of Kyiv – together with a visit to St. Sophia Cathedral, Andrew’s Descent and Podol, which allows you to see the development of the city from its origins to the present day.

Vorontsov Palace – an aristocratic symbol of Odessa

Vorontsov Palace – one of the most famous palaces of the city, built in the 19th century for Governor-General Mikhail Vorontsov. Its architecture combines restrained classicism with light Mediterranean motifs, which gives the building a special elegance.

Located on a hill by the sea, the palace forms one of the key architectural accents of Odessa. It was such residences that at one time created the image of the city as a “southern capital” – open, European and multicultural.

How to visit? The palace is best discovered as part of a walk through the historical center of Odessa – together with Primorsky Boulevard, the Potemkin Stairs and the Opera House, which allows you to see the city as a holistic architectural ensemble.

Menorah – a modern monument of the new time

Photo – menorah-center.com

Menorah – one of the largest Jewish cultural and business centers in the world and a vivid example of modern architecture of Ukraine. The complex was opened in 2012, and it became a new symbol of the city of Dnipro.

Its shape and scale contrast sharply with the historical buildings, but this is what creates a unique image of Dnipro – a city where different eras are combined. Inside – museums, exhibition spaces, hotels and cultural venues.

This is an example of how modern architecture can not only complement the city, but also form its new identity.

How to visit? The complex is usually included in sightseeing tours of the Dnipro, which allow you to see the city as a holistic mix of history, modernity and modernity.

Bakota – a submerged history

Once a full-fledged city with a thousand-year history, today it is one of the most atmospheric places in Ukraine. Bakota was submerged under the waters of the Dniester Reservoir in the 1980s, leaving behind only fragments of the past.

However, it is this “absence” that creates a unique atmosphere. Today, Bakota is a cliff, a cave monastery, and panoramas that make you stop and just stare. The place attracts not only tourists, but also those looking for silence and a feeling of being “outside of time.”

How to visit? Bakota is often included in thematic routes in Podillia – in particular, the tour “Bakota – a place of power and secrets”, which combines natural landscapes, history, and local legends.

Palanok Castle – a fortress that did not give up

Photo – vidviday.ua

Palanok Castle rises on a volcanic hill and seems almost unreachable. Its history spans several centuries, during which the structure was gradually expanded, turning into one of the most powerful fortresses in the region.

The most interesting page in the life of the monument is the defense of the castle by Princess Ilona Zrini, who held it during the siege for several years. That is why Palanok is not just an architectural monument, but a symbol of resilience and struggle.

How to visit? The castle is one of the key stops on Transcarpathia itineraries, in particular on the “10 Highlights of Transcarpathia” tour, which combines cultural attractions, nature and visits to seasonal locations, such as sakura blossoms.

Ukrainian cuisine is striking in its regional diversity, from Transcarpathian cheeses and wines to Odessa seafood, Lviv coffee and Podolia dishes from age-old recipes. The best gastronomic tours of Ukraine are collected in this article.

Optimistichna Cave – an underground world of records

Among all the underground objects of Ukraine, Optimistichna Cave occupies a special place. It is the longest gypsum cave in the world and one of the longest in general – its explored passages stretch for hundreds of kilometers.

It resembles a separate world with its own geography: areas, labyrinths, narrow passages and halls, which are open only to those who are ready to explore, because even today the cave has not been fully explored – it continues to keep its secrets.

How to visit? The best way is as part of speleological routes that unite several caves – Mlynky, Kryshtaleva, Atlantis and Optimistichna.

Dovbush Rocks – a stone city of the Carpathians

A unique natural and historical complex – Dovbush Rocks – is hidden among the Carpathian forests. This is a chaotic accumulation of stone blocks that form a natural labyrinth with passages, “streets” and narrow corridors.

According to legends, this is where Oleksa Dovbush’s opryshok hid, and the rocks themselves served as a natural fortress. At the same time, researchers believe that this place could have been important long before that – as an ancient cult center.

Today, Dovbush Rocks are a combination of wild nature, history and a special energy that is difficult to explain, but easy to feel.

How to visit? The most convenient way is as part of a hike along the mountain routes of the Carpathians, in particular tours that combine Dovbush Rocks with climbs to neighboring peaks, such as Mount Makovytsia.

Tustan – a fortress carved into the rocks

Photo – wikipedia.org (Author - Zysko Serhii)

Hidden among the Carpathian forests is one of the most unique defensive structures in Europe – Tustan. It is not just a fortress, but an entire medieval complex that literally “grew” out of the rocks. In the 9th–13th centuries, it was an important customs point and part of the defense system of Russia.

The most amazing thing is the traces of wooden structures that are still visible in the stone. It is thanks to them that researchers were able to almost accurately recreate the appearance of the fortress. This is one of the few examples where architecture and nature are so organically combined.

How to visit? The most convenient way is to combine a trip with a vacation in Truskavets – excursions to Tustan Fortress are regularly organized from here. Such routes are often included in the programs of health tours with walks and trips to key locations in the Lviv region.
