We’ll tell you which Ukrainian cities to include in your itinerary for an atmospheric journey in the article below.

Why are Ukraine’s atmospheric cities worth seeing with your own eyes?

Ukrainian cities preserve the architecture of different eras, traces of cultural influences from neighboring peoples, and legends and traditions passed down from generation to generation. Strolling along the cobblestone streets of old neighborhoods and visiting fortresses, cathedrals, and museums allows you to feel how our history was shaped. Cities with well-preserved centers, cozy cafes, and local cuisine are particularly valuable—they are what create the true atmosphere of travel. People return to such places again: to confirm that their first impression was not mistaken and to discover new details.

7 Ukrainian Cities for an Atmospheric Journey from Visit Ukraine

Uzhhorod

The “Getting to Know Uzhhorod” tour introduces the capital of Zakarpattia to those seeking the slow pace and warmth of a provincial town. Over three nights and four days, travelers will have time to walk through the city center with a guide, listen to stories about Uzhhorod’s homes and cafes, and go on a scavenger hunt with a map and stickers in search of bronze mini-sculptures. There are over forty of them in the city—including Mozart, Harry Houdini, Andy Warhol, a miniature Eiffel Tower, and a family of hedgehogs. The program includes accommodation in a modern apartment with breakfast and access to the spa area, making for a relaxed and comfortable stay.

Chernivtsi

The “Let’s Go to Bukovina” tour lasts two days and covers several of the region’s highlights. The group departs from Lutsk, stops near the Dzhuryne Waterfall—the highest lowland waterfall in Ukraine—and later reaches Kolomyia, where the “Pysanka” Museum awaits tourists with the world’s largest collection of these works of art. The next day includes a tour of Chernivtsi University—the former residence of the metropolitans, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—and a stroll through the city, often compared to a “little Paris.”

A separate highlight is the Khreshchatyk observation deck with a panoramic view of Zalishchyky, offering a vista of the Ukrainian “fjord.”

Kamianets-Podilskyi

The “Kamianets-Podilskyi Cruise + Bakota” program is designed for a two-day trip from Lviv or Ternopil. First, tourists will visit the Khotyn Fortress, then enjoy the panoramic views of Bakota with its rock monastery, and in the evening, check into a hotel in Kamianets itself. The next day includes a tour of the city and its famous fortress, as well as a boat cruise through the Dniester Canyon, considered one of the most beautiful in Ukraine. The combination of stone walls, water landscapes, and the tranquility of the rock monasteries creates the very atmosphere that makes this journey worthwhile.

Khotyn

The “Treasures of the Khotyn Fortress” tour is a one-day trip that begins with a departure from Kamianets-Podilskyi and takes you along the road through the landscapes of Podillia. Tourists arrive at the fortress for a guided tour: the guide tells stories about the princes, hetmans, conquerors, and defenders of the stronghold, leading visitors through the bastions, towers, chapel, and barracks. The exhibition features medieval weapons, knightly armor, and reconstructed interiors from the garrison era. A panoramic viewing platform offers a view of the Dniester River and the surrounding hills, while the old town of Khotyn, with its historic church and cozy streets, completes the atmosphere of the Podillia region.

Lviv

The “Discover Lviv for Yourself” tour offers a classic introduction to one of the country’s most colorful cities, whose historic center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The program includes a stroll along the cobblestone streets of the medieval quarter, a tour of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque landmarks, and visits to places of worship of various faiths—from Orthodox cathedrals to ancient Armenian and Jewish shrines. Special attention is given to Lviv’s legendary coffee and traditional cuisine, without which a trip to the city would be unimaginable. The organizers take care of all the details: support from a tour manager, advice on crossing the border, safety instructions, assistance in setting up the air raid alert app, a map of shelters, and transportation along the route.

Ivano-Frankivsk

The tour “Ivano-Frankivsk — the city that’s always with you” is a guided walking tour of the historic center. The route starts at the Ivan Franko monument near the Nadiya Hotel and passes by the Ivan Franko Drama Theater with its Hutsul-style interior, Nezalezhnosti Street with its cafes and historic buildings, Vichevy Square with the city’s largest fountain, the Cathedral of the Holy Resurrection with its five-tiered iconostasis, Sheptytsky Square, the Bastion, City Hall, and the Armenian Church. Along the way, tourists will learn about the history of Stanislaviv—as Ivano-Frankivsk was known until 1962—and about the Italian architect François Corasini, whose design shaped the city. Wrought-iron sculptures add to the atmosphere, serving as a reminder of the annual blacksmith festivals.

Klevan

The “Tunnel of Love + Castles of Volhynia” tour is a one-day trip from Kyiv that combines natural wonders and historical landmarks of Volhynia. The first stop is Ostroh with its State Historical and Cultural Reserve, followed by the famous Tunnel of Love in Klevan, where the railroad tracks run through a green corridor of intertwined branches. After lunch in Dubno, tourists tour Dubno Castle, and then head to Tarakaniv Fort—a defensive structure that has preserved its underground passages and the atmosphere of a border stronghold. The return to Kyiv is scheduled for the evening of the same day.

An alternative way to explore the capital of Zakarpattia is offered by the bus tour “Uzhhorod and Surroundings”, which combines a tour of miniature sculptures, a tasting of Zakarpattia coffee, a visit to the 11th-century Horyanska Rotunda, the “Deca u Notarya” tavern-museum, and a dip in the thermal pools at the “Zolota Hora” ranch. For those with a little more time, the three-day tour “Wonders of Podillia and Bukovina + Bakota” will take you through Chernivtsi, Khotyn, Bakota, and Kamianets-Podilskyi, featuring a boat ride through the Dniester Canyon and the chance to relax in vats.

Lviv enthusiasts should check out the custom walking tour “Off-the-Beaten-Path Lviv”, which takes you through neighborhoods off the tourist trail, introducing you to the city’s oldest churches, courtyards with murals, and stories from local residents. For those who want to gain a deeper understanding of Ivano-Frankivsk, the author-led walk “Frankivsk Under the Microscope” is a great fit, featuring a unique route through interesting courtyards and the entrances of central buildings.
